Does anyone know when kids first start to dream?

My 16mth old woke at quarter to twelve last night and just seemed really 'spooked'. I wondered whether he'd had a bad dream?
Any ideas appreciated?
Thanks

I thought babies dreamt from very early on, even before birth. Certainly ds used to chatter in his sleep, and he still occasionally laughs out in the middle of the night (he's 17 months) and occasionally cries without actually waking up.

ds used to wince, cry out and laugh in his sleep at 2 weeks. Very odd! I can't imagine what he must have been dreaming about.

ah. ds kept crying and looking towards the door and pointing and he was really upset. i'd woken him up coughing, and he was in a really deep sleep. was quite weird.

it was almost as if he wasn't quite 'awake' and seemed confused by everything. maybe he is starting to get confused between dreams and reality? we thought he may have been scared of the dark last night, but he never has been before.

My 13 month old was laughing out loud in his sleep last week so he must have been having a good one!
