They learn to sleep through it. They just do. And I personally made sure I didn't have any more kids until the first child's sleep was utterly sorted.

But illnesses are hell on earth, especially when you don't have a partner. I have had days when I have had to put beebies on and doze on the sofa because ds1 was up until 12 and ds2 was up from 1!

very occassionally one will wake the other they are 3 and 1 but they pretty much actually just sleep through it, will be adding to the clan soon so thatll be interesting, hopefully it will stay that way!

The noise their sibling's making is nothing to do with them - they don't have to soothe, change sheets or clothes or administer medicine or any of the other things you might have to do for a child who's wakeful and shouty in the night - so they can sleep through it.

Are you an only child, Bumbly? If not, do you remember being woken by your siblings?

they get used to it

my 5 and 3 YO share a room and i have to put them to bed together or they do wake each other but thats thru poking rather than noise. Waking each other up thru noise alone is rare (thank goodness!)

my children have never (or very rarely) woken each other up but yes illnesses are a rude awakening to having more than one child, i'm still trying to decide if it is better when they are poorly at the same time or when slightly over-lapping

Dd (2.5 years) annoyingly tends to wake ds (4 months) who sleeps through the night. She's only been waking in the night since he was born [grrrrrrr emoticon]

Generally they don't but we recently had a particularly bad night with dd2 (18 months). Dh and I were up maybe 10 times in the night. She shares room with dd1 (5). In the morning our lovely dd1 said that she had been up twice herself saying "shh shh" to the baby!
