Phenegon, how old!

Hi,
Got a 1 year old ds that wont sleep at what age can phenegon be used?

hi marne, it's from 2. But there are other sedatives for younger children - hydroxyzine (I think) was a godsend when my 10 month old went through a habit of whingeing for 2-3 hours in the middle of the night for no good reason. It's prescription only but shouldn't be a problem if you have a sympathetic GP.

i also got hydroxyzine from my doc but that was for a 12 hours flight toe perth (Oz) when my ds was 16mth. very good stuff.
medised also works, you get it over the counter and it knocks them out, its ment for colds but my doc said theres no problem in using it on the odd nite..

Gookgrrl - did that work to break the cycle? My 18mth DD often wakes at 3 or 4am and won't go back to sleep. Seems like she's ready for morning, but of course by 8am is ready to go back to bed. Wonder if this is worth trying. GOing to start a thread to see if anyone else has advice, getting so tired and grumpy with it now

marne medised does work but doesnt create a cycle. I have been having the same problem with my 17mth old. He wakes up through the night whining then he gets up at 5.30am. Its only really been since his latest bout of teething but even so it leaves me unable to function very well..didnt even know about phenegon..how many nights can u use that?

is it only available on prescription and is it something you just alternate?

No you can buy it over the counter. My sister said sometimes they don't like to give it to you - so best to say its for a flight or something (rather than to just drug your baby to sleep!) but my DH had no trouble getting it. Too sccared to try it tho as it says from 2 years

maybe it is their age as all our little ones are around the same age. My ds will sleep great for about 2/3 nights then its like he thinks oo too much sleep need to be awake ALL night...arghhh

Nemo - that's exactly it! I'm a SAHM and i like it that way, but just been thinking maybe I should put her in Nursery for a bit, all my friends say they come home exhausted! Or maybe try swimming every afternoon

pipsy I take ds to groups, soft play and generally keep him active and tbh it doesn seem to make a difference. The only thing i have notices is if he has a good sleep in the day then he tends to sleep that night but since i cut out his daytime bottle for a cup it deosnt send him to sleep as easily...sigh am sure they will sleep one day!

I think there's some confusion here.
Phenergan - available over the counter, from 2 years
Hydroxyzine - prescription only, from 6 months

Hydroxyzine worked wonders for my ds. We got a week's worth and afterwards he continued sleeping through most nights. It didn't stop him waking up really but instead of screaming for 2-3 hours he'd only have a little 5 minute whinge and then go back to sleep.

lockets the chemist won't give you it OTC if you turn up with a child who is clearly under 2. I used to use Phenergan for my older daughter who had bad eczema (and would scratch all night sometimes), and always had problems getting it if I had a younger child with me whilst shopping.

Hi thankyou all for your help, got some today it does say not for use for under two's. Think im going to try it anyway but in a small dose and see what happens, would just be nice to get a nights sleep,

My mum works in a pharmacy and the pharmacists say they would never give their own kids under 1 medised despite the fact it says it's suitable for under 1.
I wouldnt give phenegan to a 1 year old. Why is it only suitable for 2 years and up? Guess I'd have to know that especially if it affects breathing etc.

I think it's because of antihistamine that the pharmacists dont like it being used for under one - medised that is.

It has a horrible taste and dd wont touch it.

You know, I think you are all right. You can get so tired that you clutch at straws, but obviously I wouldn't jeopardise my daughter's health......
I guess if it says 2 years there must be a reason.

My DD will take medised from a syringe and it is fab when she has a really runny cold. As it has anti-histamine it is supposed to make them drowsy and so get off to sleep more easily but as my problem is 4am then its not going to help

I've tried a syringe too but it gets spat out.
