My 4.5 month old keeps waking half an hour after bedtime

Any ideas? He wakes up and screams anything from half an hour to 45 mins after he's gone to bed at 7. Sometimes we can re-settle him, a few times he's been wide awake again and we've ended up getting him up again for an hour until he's sleepy again. It's only been the last week or so, and it's the only time of day he does this - daytime naps he wakes up and gurgles to himself for a bit and other times at night and in the morning he's not screaming. It's making me tense st bedtime which can't be helping

Hi apsie, my dd (5.5 months) often does this as well, though she doesn't scream. Does your ds need to burp maybe? My dd often wakes and does a big burp then settles back down.

Helps to know I'm not the only one, just wish I could be sure of the reason - fairly sure it's not a burp though, as he has his last feed before bath and bedtime

I have a 10mo whose sleep has caused me many trials and tribulations so I have read many a sleep book and this is what I have discovered...

There is a time between 30mins to 1hour after falling asleep that your baby moves from light to deep sleep. This process causes your baby to rouse slightly and some don't like this much, so they wake up. If there is a problem, like teething, this is the time they may feel it and decide to tell you all about it.

They just need a bit of help to make the transition into deep sleep, is all. It passes.

I have similar problem + my dd only settles in the car seat ( recomended by gp whan she had a cold - month and a half ago). How can I help her to sleep in her cot?

Have you tried putting her awake in the carseat in the cot for a few days so that she gets used to her new surroundings. Then, trying without the carseat a week or so later.

Hope that makes sense.. have terrible pregnancy brain today.

yes, she sleeps in the car seat in the cot and settles by herself but anytime I try to put her just in the cot she starts smiling and then crying and than she is completly awake again

I guess your only option is to keep trying.
Settle her, leave the room, wait until she cries then repeat the process. It is very hard as a mum to see your little one distressed, but I suspect that sleeping in a carseat long term is not good for her and at some point soon she'll outgrow it.

I feel for you. It is so hard to change little ones behaviour when it is causing everyone so much distress.

Would you like more sleep book advice? (God, I'm sad)

They say put the car seat next to her cot, wait til she is very very nearly asleep, then move her into her cot. You may have to do this several thousand times before she finally gets the idea that she can settle in her cot. When she can do this, then move her a little bit earlier and repeat and repeat and repeat!!!

It may take ages, but it may not! In the meantime, be pleased your baby can self settle somewhere- mine can't yet. But we are getting there vvvveeeeeeerrrrrryyyyyyy ssssslllllooooowwwwwwlllllllllyyyyyyyy.

My DS, who is now over 2, did this as a baby. He outgrew it at some point, can't remember when exactly. It was transitioning in to deep sleep. We found what worked for him was to dash to him and put a firm hand over his tummy chest. Sometimes if that didn't work we would do the shush/pat from Baby Whisperer. once he was over his half hour blip he would sleep fine. It was nightmare, but looking back it was such a short phase but seemed very intense at the time.

I have this same problem - it is driving me nuts! Pinkmunkee - what you say about the transition from light to deep sleep makes sense. How do I help her make this transition?

My dd sleeps in the cot now - kind of did it by herself - too sqashed in the car seat . Stiil WAKES UP 1/2 HOUR AFTER FALLING ASLEEP, if I feed her streat away she usualy goes back to sleep but ocassionaly she wakes up. I think I'll just wait till she grows out of it
