Don't tell me all your babies actually SLEEP these days?!

Actually dd (who I joined you to moan about months ago) now sleeps through more often than not, but only in the last couple of weeks and she is 2.

But now ds doesn't sleep. Usual night is up 6/7 times, although last night was only 3. I was looking for the thread for moral support and it doesn't seem to exist anymore

can I join you? how old is your DS?

If this thread is re-established, I'm there too. ....albeit slowly and with matchsticks propping open eyes. My DS is 4 months old and regards sleep as an optional extra that he chooses to do without. Unfortunately he doesn't want to go it alone IYSWIM.

The original gang have a reunion thread in Meet Ups - I think most of them are getting more sleep - and some of them are moving onto the next baby so they're either mad or getting some rest .

I posted on it for a while but DS was a lot younger than most people's babies in there. They gave me fantastic support though, I am sure there's room for a generation 2 thread.

DS still has never slept through so I'm still eligible ... [sigh]

I'm in. DS is 18 months and has slept through (by which I mean until 530-ish) ooh, about five times in his life.

shreddies - are your and my DS;s in cahoots - he has slept through to about 5am about 3 times now!

he goes to bed properly at 7pm after bath, cuddle and milk (on beaker now not bottle - bit of a fight but trying!), goes into bed awake and settles himself to sleep. Mutters around 9.40 or 10.50 pm, and usually goes back to sleep. But once i get in bed (my own not his cot!!) I can be up 3 to 6 times, before I give in around 4.30am and put him in our bed - there he cuddles in and sleeps for 45 mins or so, then wakes up shouting for milk. After bottle, goes back to sleep until after 7am! Needs retraining I think!!!

Oh good, at least we can have SIFTW the next generation then!

DS is 7 months, usually up 6 or 7 times. No change since introducing solids despite having taken to it really well. We cosleep part of the night (ie after the second or third waking when I can't be bothered to get up anymore) but he mostly refuses to feed lying down so it doesn't help much.

Oh please let me sign in!! Couldn't sleep until 1:30am last night (not sure why, had something to fret about), Baby feeds 2-4x/night and the 4yo was squawking at 3am. Then the phone rang at 6:15 am from DH's work, I'm so tired I can't sleep now.....

My 4 month old is usually up 3 or 4 times a night (although two nights ago, following his vaccinations and a dose of calpol, it was just once!!) but sadly this often includes a 2 hour wakeful period when he wants demands company i.e. cries if left alone. He's also wise to the trick of feeding while lying down. No-one is going to allow his mummy to nap while feeding him - and as for the idea that he might drift off while lying down after feeding, well, I ask you! Oh, and he's a fan of 6am starts, which I really wouldn't mind if I hadn't been up and down like a yo-yo throughout the night.

I am going to love this thread. Maybe there are no answers other than time (and given DS' tender age, perhaps I have a lot of time to struggle through before I reacquaint myself with anything like a proper night's sleep) but it's so nice not to be alone.

please can i join?!!

DD 7mths and her sleep, which has never been great, has just deteriorated so much in the past few months.

I am in awe of those of you with toddlers to contend with too!

She goes down ok, and the 7-10ish period is usually ok, then she's up and down all night, I don't want to count how often or I will cry!

Hi, can I join? the people on the Feb 08 thread call me the night poster...

DS (5mo) had a phase at 3mo of sleeping beautifully for 6-8 hours at a time. BUT! no longer. These days, it's a right faff getting him to sleep in the first place (lots of crying/fighting sleep/thinking he wants to feed then changing his mind) and then he wakes a lot asking for milk - every 2-3 hours usually. This used to be fine when he would feed lying down, but he recently seems to have decided that this Will Not Do and so we have to traipse downstairs and MN for half an hour while he feeds away and then drifts off to sleep.

It's not his fault - he's always been quite a slow, inefficient feeder b/c of a high palate - but the sleep deprivation is starting to take its toll on me. Am supposed to be going back to work when he is 6mo and very worried about this. Don't want to give up bf completely though as fought very hard to be able to bf in the first place. Supply rather precarious so not keen to go with own mum's advice "ask the HV again" or with HV advice "give a bottle of formula at night" .

Anyway yeah prob more info than you needed to know but it's good to have a bit of a grumble at times!!

Hello, I used to post on the original thread . Good to see that it's back as a source of support, although obviously would be better if it wasn't needed!

Anyway, just wanted to offer some hope. DS was a truly, appalling, dreadful sleeper until 9 months... since then (he's now 17mo) he sleeps through every night unless teething or ill (or unless he gets stuck in the corner of the cot). So there will be an end to the sleeplessness, although sometimes it feels like it will go on forever...

Caz10 · 19/07/2008 21:00

oooh thanks, here's hoping

did you do anything to help that happen or was it just a matter of time?

Report
MegBusset · 19/07/2008 21:10

We did do controlled crying but a lot of it was just DS being ready -- I don't think it would have worked sooner. It really wasn't that bad and worked very quickly but I know it's not for everyone. A lot of the other babies from the original thread simply got better as they got older. In the meantime it's a question of doing whatever gets everyone the most sleep (in our case that was co-sleeping).

Please may I join? DD (15 mo), has only slept a 6 hour shift once. Usually waking between 3 (that's a rare night)and 6 times for cuddles and nuzzles. She has our old double bed now so I get in with her after about the 3rd or 4th time!

It's good to know your not alone seems nearly everyone on my postnatal Jan thread is getting full nights sleep and the talk has shifted to 'will be glad when they sleep in beyond 6 am, drop the 10/11pm feed or the 5 am feed'
If only .......
DD 6 mths as Caz sleeps fine from 7 - 10 then on a good night i am up 3 times until she gets up for the day at 6ish
I have had both sides of coin, ds 6 never slept through until gone 3 and dd1 slept through from 6 weeks she still loves her sleep, ds sleeps through but is still early riser and i am praying and hoping dd2 doesn't follow suit!

I'm in. 7 mo DD takes until ~9:30pm to get to sleep, up 1-3 times between then & 6:30am when we all get up for work. On a bad night I can be awake from 1-4 am. This hasn't happened on a work night yet (back 4 full days/week since she was 6 mo).

I reckon there must be a relationship between how well a baby sleeps & how big the age gap is between them and any siblings.

I'm in - although away on 'hols' at the moment so I might not be on much at first. DD gone bananas about sleeping. I'm finding it very difficult to 'read' her at the moment which is very unusual so I feel all at sea and like a bad mum. Doesn't help that I'm staying with DPs who have a very strong 'leave her to cry' ethic.

Don't worry Lilyloo- I'm still in limbo.

Meg I remember you from the original thread, glad you are getting some sleep now!

Hi Caz, Glad you found this- I was going to hoick you and BT over from dec although i think BT is only up twice now so maybe she doesn't qualify anymore!

Sallyforth your ds sounds a lot like mine.

Lilyloo I know what you mean, dd at 10 months still fed 3 times a night and I got up however many more to plug the dummy back in, managed to cut her down to 2 then 1 feed fairly easily but she still had one lot of milk in the night until a few weeks ago, and it doesn't take much to upset her sleep. However she was bottle fed from 5 months and fed at roughly the same times every night and the dummy would often work for her-DS is completely different. I can't just put the dummy in for him, I have to pick him up, then when he is up he wants boob and his timings are completely random, I can't even go to bed and think "I'll get 2 hours now before he wakes". I can see the light at the end of the tunnel because of dd but I have a feeling it will take ds a LOT longer.

Zippy what is the age gap between yours? There is 18 months between my 2.

Huh. DS woke again at 4am for a feed and now won't go back to sleep. DH woke up with the crying and LO noticed and held his arms out to be cuddled (we co-sleep) so perhaps LO thinks it's morning now?? it is getting light after all....

... sigh....

i'm in... too tired to type too many details n ds has just fallen asleep on my lap (???)

but - ds 6mo, teething, starting to crawl, now takes 2 v hard hours to settle then sleeps 2 hour chunks if i'm lucky. also wants to start day at 5.30. have never been so utterly knackered in my life! tries to crawl around/out of cot while i'm 'settling' him. would be funny from a distance. but isn't.

hugs and pats on the back all round - we're still standing (just about) and we all deserve medals...
