Sleep

Advice please..

ds (3) recently moved from cot to bed has started to move himself from underneath the duvet to on top of it.. at various point during the night.

He then gets too cold and screams for me to put him back (to 'make him cosy').
If I ignore him, he screams more and wakes himself up, if I sort him out quickly then he goes back to sleep.

Last night though he did it 4 times at 11/12/3am and 6am

He has a grobag, and wears pyjamas underneath.. but his room does chill off.
We have started a sticker chart.. but he doesn't seem that bothered.

So how to break this habit?
Any advice please... as I'm getting knackered

(it's like having a newborn all over again!!!!)

hi unicorn. a friend of mine puts the duvet tucked in under her ds and a cellular blanket on top. apparently having the duvet underneath traps all of his body heat and he remains cosy all night...don't know if this will help but worth a try?

ooh thanks sophable.. that sounds like a good idea...
I bet he will find a way to get on top of the blanket though; it seems like he moves around a lot in his sleep, then wakes himself up as a result iyswim!

unicorn, tbh, if he's in a 2.5 tog grow bag, and maybe longsleeved vest/pj's underneath, he should be alright without blanket...could it be that he is waking cuase he is getting in a kerfuddle with his bedding rather than cause he is cold. i would be inclined to up what he wears under the grobag and not have a blanket at all...

my mum always says warmth underneath is more effective than on top. OLd wives tale probably! I'd rather snuggle UNDER the duvet thanks.

thanks
will give it a go tonight... lots of warm things under his bag and see if it makes any difference.

Otherwise I need to work out how to break this habit as it is making us all very, very , bad tempered (especially me!)

If he's waking at 11 surely the house is still quite warm - any idea what the temperature is in his room?

What about a hot water bottle?

A bedrail along the edge (perhaps with a bumper) might stop any draughts? If there are air vents in the walls you could cover them up at night?

Is he alongside any walls that you could pad with extra blankets?

thanks morningp..
his room has 2 outside walls so does get quite nippy once the heating is off.
He has a bed rail, and I don't think there are any vents anywhere.

I have just had another thought, because he turns himself totally upside down, it may be that he prefers to sleep closer to the door, where he can see a light (bathroom).Or it may be that he just prefers sleeping in that position,(and I keep turning him back!!!!!!!!) so maybe I need to try a nightlight, and/or, turn the bed around?

The grobag is supposed to be used INSTEAD of a duvet, blankets etc, according to them. I certainly never used them together. My ds who is three now wears PJs and has a 4.5 tog duvet which we tuck in VERY firmly before he goes to sleep and it stays in place. I don't think he's a very restless sleeper though. A duvet AND grobag seems a big much to me.

aloha..come and try ds room at 3am (or 1am if you'd prefer!)
Believe me, it does chill off, and ds (unlike his warm blooded sister) really feels it.

Anyhow, he didn't want me to turn the bed around, I have given him a nightlight(which he seems to quite like),and he has been wrapped up warm.

So fingers crossed for a 'quiet' night.

quick update...
ds (after a bit of messing around in the early part of the evening) eventually slept through until 6am!!

The only thing that seemed to wake him then was that he had dropped his comfy blanket (his 'babby')

So we're all less bad tempered this morning!!!!!

Let's hope its not a none off!!
