Dropping nap at just turned two? Temporary or the end of the road?

My 25 month old hasn’t napped for 4 days - husband thinks she’s dropping the nap, I think (hope!) it’s a phase/ developmental leap.

Anyone else had a similar experience? Would love to hear the outcome!

My first 3 had all dropped naps by 2. Which was really really disappointing, especially when you hear about kids who still nap (and sleep at night) at 3 or 4.

Dc4 is 21m and I hope he keeps his nap a little longer!

I thought the last leap was at around 18m?
I reckon it's the end of the road.

Sorry it didn't attach.

Not an official developmental leap but she’s started talking in proper sentences and spends her nap time talking to herself in her cot so not sure if she is just practising a new skill...

You attachment suggests I have another year to go..?!

Ours had a wobble around that time, we kept putting her down, she still sleeps 1-2.5 hours a day at 3.5y (and 11 hours a night). Properly knackered if she doesn't nap. YMMV but may not be permanent.

My second dropped nap before 2. Shes nearly three now and hasn't napped during the day in over a year.

Mine stopped having a nap then, sorry! It was during the first lockdown when nursery was shut and we were both working full-time around him so as I'm sure you can imagine we tried so hard to get him napping again as it was the only in time that we could both work at the same time during the day but alas, if they don't need it any more there isn't anything you can do. For what it's worth I do think it comes with some advantages - it's nice not having to factor naps into plans.

Why are you all telling what I don’t want to hear?? Grin

For those that dropped, was it all of a sudden or gradual? She was doing two hour naps last week (which had no negative impact on bedtime or night sleep) so seems a bit out of the blue to me. Plus she napped all the days she was at nursery this week gone too...

Bear in mind that your thread title is likely to encourage confirmation bias here, it will attract those who did drop naps early to post. A necessary reminder is that it is very unusual to drop naps at 25 months old, but the majority of people who had a toddler with "normal" naps are less likely to respond to your thread.

I would be inclined to assume you are going through a phase of poor daytime sleep, rather than assuming it is permanent. Be careful not to stop the habit of going to bed at naptime, because it is very easy to lose that habit and very difficult to restart it once it's gone.

Sounds like your DD might need a little extra help to settle down during the day, that's all.

Ds1 went from nap to no nap at 2.5 and just went down by 7 from then on. Ds2 however stopped regularly napping at 1.5! If he had a nap he would be up forever that night, even if just a short one, so get a lot less sleep overall. Or no nap and then had to spend late afternoon keeping him going by any means necessary, so he would actually get a decent night's sleep. He was just under 2.5 when he dropped nap completely, but didn't go down early.

Mine dropped all naps for over 4 weeks (bar a couple of naps during this time) but I kept putting her in the cot for 'quiet' time and they actually came back!!

She's 2.5 now and is still napping - not quite everyday but 2 out of every 3 days she naps for 1-1.5 hours.

Keep with it as I think they still need a bit of rest during the day.

Good luck

Thanks all - and yes, conscious that I’m likely to be attracting early nap droppers to this thread!

My little one went down for 1hr 40 yesterday and then slept through from bedtime at 7.30pm to 7am as normal without issue so hope is not all lost. Definitely plan to keep putting her down for “quiet time” at the very least..!

Just an update if anyone else is going through the same that my little one is back to napping for 1.5 - 2 hours a day. It took us going back to sleep training techniques one day when she was obvious knackered but refusing to nap, but that seems to have done something as we’re back to normal.

Very relieved we didn’t assume she was dropping the nap now!
