Sleep

Baby unable to resettle after 30 min nap

Why is it that my four month old baby is able to settle self to sleep in crib but can’t resettle after waking up at the end of sleep cycle?

I thought they have more chance in resettling when they fall asleep by themselves? It’s not the case with mine!

Sometimes he definitely needs to sleep more after the wake up but he just goes to pieces instead 😰

Had this. It improved randomly at 6 months. Just had to go with it, and I remember being all ready to go up and get her one day and she just napped on!!! I used to be able to get exactly 1 workout of 30 day shred exactly before she’d wake!!!!!

My 4.5 month old is exactly the same. Clearly can link cycles as we get stretches at night but daytime naps are exactly 30 mins!!!

Same here! My theory is that they know its daytime so their minds are telling them to be up. Mine settles fine at night and sleeps 3-4 hr stretches, only waking for quick feeds but we get 30mins max in crib in day. Exception: the pram where she can do 2-3hrs so we always have one long nap in there every day. I think she finds it super cosy...
Yesterday I managed to stop full waking after her 30min morning nap, did white noise and rocking of crib and she went back and slept 1.5hrs!! Tried again today and failed... stopped rocking too early so she only did 40mins. Still, worth trying out!

Thanks Rodent01 that’s reassuring. Guess they just need to practice get the knack of it.

On two minds on where they should nap... upstairs in crib with white noise and dark room or downstairs living room tv on etc.? If nap in crib then wouldn’t they find it hard to sleep where there’s noise if out and about? Or downstairs get used to day noise but it’s too distracting?

Either way he still wakes after 30 mins!

Where do you find best to put your baby to nap?

Had this too. Just like the PP, it resolved itself randomly one day at 6 months. It's definitely a good start that he is self settling to begin the nap.

Thanks for the tip Booksandtea84, I tried it but he was still crying and crying. He can fall asleep in the pram but as soon as we’re home he’s awake. Think what he finds it tricky is when he wakes and wants to fall back to sleep he won’t allow himself to, he gets upset instead of letting himself dose off, bless him hopefully eventually he’ll get the hang of it.

I have one of these too, jamjar. I was getting stressed about it because he was miserable when he woke after his 30 minutes, so I knew his naps weren't long enough, but then decided to go with the flow and see what happened. Then randomly about a week before he turned 5 months he started doing 1 hour naps. I couldn't believe it.

He sleeps in his crib in my bedroom with white noise playing on YouTube, which was originally to drown out the noise of my 3 year old, but I wouldn't change it now. Although he will happily sleep in his pram for hours on end if we're out and about.

I’m so glad I found this. The 30 min naps have been driving me mad. My LO started doing this at 3.5 months, now 4.5 and I’m just desperate for it to end. When she has randomly done a longer nap she’s so much happier and sleeps well at night. But this is rare and she’s getting herself into overtired cycles then waking up throughout the early hours of the morning. I’m so glad for those who said it just randomly improved, I’m desperately hanging on to that 🙏🏼

It's so normal but annoying.
My first never really improved at all until she dropped all naps. She was just a horrid cat napper
My second is now 3 months and has some longer and some short naps.
Nothing I do makes any difference

I still do naps downstairs in pram at 6.5 months old. Think I do until she having long long naps. Night crib. I do this as at that age lo should be in same room for you for all naps and sleeps and found bedroom quite restricting.

Yep 4 months my LO had these types of naps but consistent of trying to extend either by rocking white noise etc every single time worked for us eventually and we have about 1.5 hours on good times. Dummy works a wonder for us x
