Sleep

CC regression...over and over again

Hey all.

1st DD, absolute angel, slept like a dream.

2nd DD, absolute nightmare.

As much as we wanted to avoid this, we had to do CC as 2nd DD would not be put down to sleep. Put her down after 2 minutes or 2 hours, made no difference. She knew she was being put down and wailed for hours. So we either cuddled her all night or did CC - rightly or wrongly we saw no other option and chose CC.

It was a nightmare for a week, whatever, but she slept so much better after that.

The issue is, she keep regressing into bad sleep and we've had to do the CC week of pain multiple times. Is this normal?

She's now 10 months and this has been going on since our 4 month sleep regression. I assume it's teeth that's waking her (has 4 so far). I really want to comfort her, but it resets all the CC work and we have to do it all again. It's truly horrible.

Please tell me it's not just me and there is an end in sight....

Its not just you. I did a versions of sleep training when DD was 13 months. It was painful it took ages and I regretted it because she's regressed big time since. I have her with me now and although I dream of a babe who sleeps 7pm-7am in her cot that's not what I've got. Dont have any advice just wanted you to know you're not alone xx

I’ve had to do that with my now 12 month DS; things like teething seem to set us back each time

I don't have experience, but from what I've read sleep training doesn't tend to work on a long term basis. It works for a bit, but then you have to do it again, and again, until the individual child is ready to sleep through on their own.

You absolutely must comfort your child if they are waking in pain! We did CC with DD, and yes you have to redo it after colds and teething, but it usually only takes one night. If my daughter wakes in the night and can't get herself back to sleep, if she's upset or scared, or if she feels sick or her teeth hurt, i get out of bed and comfort her, because if i was crying miserably in the middle of the night and the rest of the house ignored me, i would be fucking heartbroken.

Ah this is good to hear, as I was getting so down that this kept happening. It's definitely around teething too. Interesting that it's not a long term thing.

Thank you so much for this info! It's a real help, I really appreciate it.

Good point. It's heartbreaking for us to think she might be in pain and not getting attention. we've been giving her attention and thinking this is what is undoing the CC. If the reverting is going to happen anyway, we might as well comfort her. You can always tell the difference between attention and pain and we 100% go and see her and comfort her if it's pain. We figured this was wrong but it sounds like it might be the right thing to do.

There's a lady I follow on Instagram that's a sleep coach in the states. She does controlled crying. She says that the main aim is to get them to start the night on their own, if they wake then go into them and comfort back to sleep/feed.
Usually night wakings will drop once baby knows what she's doing with the first time going to sleep at night. Just plenty of practice!
Obviously I have no more advice than that, but personally I'd go into her if she was waking through the night to comfort back to sleep
