How long is too long for a newborn to nap during the day?

DS is 6 weeks old. Last night he slept from 7:30-1:30, 2:30-5:50, 6:50-7:50 and now he's been asleep for 3.5 hours. This morning when he woke up he was incredibly content and happy and went down after 9 with no crying. He had a similar sleep pattern the previous two nights but he was woken at the 3hr nap mark and he woke up very sad and was then unsettled the rest of the day and seemed overtired- he would wake every twenty minutes and when he wasn't feeding or sleeping he was grizzly.

I thought I'd just let him sleep as much as he naturally wanted today but this is getting a bit long.

Did your baby go through a long nap stage?

I think I used to offer a feed (BF) every 3-4 hours to my DC when that young. If they were still asleep I would just let them sleep. They mostly slept on me so wasn’t that big a deal as I just continued watching tv

6 weeks is one of the first big growth spurts. Some babies will sleep even more than usual and feed a lot more.

Oh good, I'm glad it's not just mine. He has seemed to double in size so that makes sense!

He's in the sling and I've hoovered and sneezed and been to the loo and he hasn't stirred. Opened a pack of crisps an hour ago and it was like a bomb went off.

Thank you, I know I'm biased but I do think he's delicious! It's the Close Caboo Lite. He's in it every day!

My DD would go through stages of what felt like literally sleeping all day, I think one day she was awake for a total of 2 hours - she would barely stir when getting her nappy changed or feeding! I remember ringing the midwife panicking as DS never did that!

DS used to be like that. Total contrast to his big sister! I remember going to a friends for coffee, he fell asleep in his car seat, stayed asleep when I lifted him out onto a mat, slept the whole time we were there and slept in the car seat until we got home. People asked if he was ever awake so long as your gorgeous baby is feeding plenty - should be about 8 feeds over 25 hours- and is gaining well then enjoy while it lasts!

Thanks all! I didn't think we'd have a day like this a month ago when I was crying from lack of sleep and worrying over his lack of sleep.

He had four hours in the end and woke up very cheerful!

DC 1 slept for 2-3 hours per day, and then was sleeping through at night at 5 weeks. Was VERY awake in between naos and very active.

DC2, well, she was pretty much asleep all the time for the first 2 weeks.
Fed, fell asleep half way through, fed some more, yawned and stretched and was slightly awake for a while, slept again til next feed.
I didn;t even see what colour her eyes were for at least a week.
She continued like that, long lazy naps and laid back awake time.
She did wake regualrly at night though.

You'll have heard grandparents and mother's not on their first saying "don't wake a sleeping baby".

Seriously unless you think they are ill or unusually lethargic there's no need to wake them. Enjoy the sleepy cuddles/peace and quiet.

I've got a 2yo and 4yo D's, due dc3 in March. If dc3 is asleep there's no way I'll be waking them unnecessarily.
