Sleep

If your first child was a terrible sleeper...

Did you cope better with the second? DD is nearly 3 and down to a blissful 1-2 wake ups most nights at the moment. I found the first 2 years really tough coping with the sleep deprivation and work. Sleeping more has made me much happier!

DC 2 is on the way and I keep remembering thinking I never ever want to feel like this again. Was it easier with baby 2?

I'm a huge believer that most of how a baby behaves is luck!

My DC2 slept all night from 5 weeks. I did nothing different. Everyone complemented me on being a "great mum", and I was like "erm... thanks but I didn't do anything".

Ds1 sorted his sleep at 4.5 yrs . DS2 was fine by 10 months . Their personalities are massively different . DS1 is also very bright . So you might get lucky on the sleep with number 2 . With the one that doesn’t sleep you might find the help you have to give with homework is minimal

DS slept through reliably just before he was 2, and I was 37 weeks pregnant with DD. Unfortunately DD was a hideous sleeper and didn't sleep though even once until she was 3.5, so I was up every single night for the best part of 5 years!!

However, if there was an award for the best sleeping children, at 7 & 9, mine would win it! It does come good eventually!

DC1 slept through at 15 months (although wasn’t as bad as a lot of sleepers I see on mn but not great). DC2 slept through from 6 months and has to be woken for nursery/the school run every morning. Chalk and delightful delicious cheese!

No better. exactly the same and I tried SO hard with number 2. Hence no number 3 .

Not my first (he sleeps like a log) but my second is three and exactly the same as yours. He nearly broke me between the ages of 1-2 when I kept being told he wouldn't improve and just didn't. He did get better at 2 but was still up and down and now sleeps in my bed more than his own.

His little sister is exactly the same, despite my prayers for another good sleeper! But this time I'm sort of 'meh' about it. She's 14 months now and I don't know whether I'm just more easy going this time, or used to it, or whatever, but I don't really think about it much. With DS I spent my life googling things to help the situation and reading threads about it, but this time it's just an accepted part of life.

My non sleeper slept through a full night for the first time aged 5. Full time at school.
When I say non sleeper I mean non sleeper. He did not sleep day or night at all ever. I was up sometimes hourly, but mostly 2-3 hourly every single night.

So we didn’t because we couldn’t do it again.
In the end there is a 10 year gap because I do believe that I would have died if I had another the same.
Luckily the second child slept well from early on.

DC1 didn’t sleep through till 15 months, the first 8 months or so were horrendous. DC2 is 9 months and exactly the same unfortunately (although she was better up to 4 months). It’s definitely easier to cope with this time round. Fingers crossed you’ll get an easy one!

DC2 slept through the night before DC1. There is a three year age gap. It did almost put me off having a second. Lack of sleep is awful. Good luck with the next one.

My second was also a terrible sleeper, and combined with a then 2.5yo who didn’t nap it’s safe to say I’ve never been so exhausted in all my life, so no it wasn’t easier! Sorry OP 😬

At least with the second I knew things would eventually improve. My eldest regressed massively when going into a toddler bed though, went from being an absolute champ sleeper to refusing to sleep until 10pm and waking through the night (we’re still going through this several months down the line). So if your eldest is already sleeping well in a bed, you might have better luck than me.

My first was a great sleeper (still is) and .y 2nd is crap. Every child is different. I used cosleeping a lot to get enough sleep in the first year or so. Do whatever you need to do xxx

Number 1 was terrible (also a traumatic birth). Numbers 2 and 3 were easy births and were much better sleepers as babies. Not 12 hours at 12 weeks type better, but not waking up hourly till age 1!
