Sleep

10 week old sleep

Hi,

My DS (2nd child) is 10 weeks. He’s gaining weight very well! Was a big baby. Feeds great (breastfed). Since birth until around 8 weeks, he was sleeping between 2 and 4 hours at night and doing great. We have him in a next to me crib.

Since around 8 weeks, at night he is waking between every 30 mins to an hour- think the most he is sleeping is around 1 hour and 15 mins. He is needing a feed each time he wakes too. He’ll sleep for longer if I fall asleep with him (lying down feeding)- I don’t do this intentionally but I’m so tired that I can’t help it. I’m not really wanting to co sleep if I can help it- I did this with my older child and couldn’t get him to sleep through in his own bed until he was 3 and a half.

I do think DS is going through a leap but my fear is that he will stay this way- my older one was a terrible sleeper so I’m a bit traumatised I think Grin

Does anyone have any tips for me? I fully anticipate that it’s just another wave we need to ride and I’m happy to go with that. However, I’ve noticed he’s crabbier through the day though- again this could be because of the leap/development but I wondered whether it was because he’s not sleeping as well.

Sorry, I can't offer any advice but we are in the exact same position. Our daughter was sleeping well until 8 weeks too (she's 9 weeks now), but the last week will only settle in our arms and seems to be awake from 3am most days! Agreed about the co-sleeping, I did this with my first daughter and would like to avoid it as much as I can, but equally... feeding lying down gives us both some much needed rest!

So apologies, no advice here - just a hand hold! Although I have heard there is a 8 week sleep regression so let's hope it's just that!!!

Thanks for your reply and sorry you’re going through the same thing!

My little one has just turned ten weeks. Last night he slept 9.30 until 1.30!!!! Shock then wouldn’t settle back in his crib but the solid chunk of sleep helped and I ended up co sleeping the rest of the night- not ideal. I fall asleep feeding and then when I wake and look at the clock it’s been a couple of hours!!

I do think there’s a regression at 8 weeks. I’m hoping that last night wasn’t a fluke!! X

Oooo that's brilliant! It's great to get those few hours in! We are quite lucky that she has been doing a 3-4 hour chunk at the beginning still, but definitely there have been nights where she won't settle from 1 onwards!

Same here with the feeding.... I just think it's the only way to survive atm. not sure what yours is like during the day but our daughter only wants to be held (a couple of weeks ago she was fine (ish) in the cot during the day!

Although I don't wish this on anyone, it's nice to know it's not just me!!!

Well we’re back to not sleeping again Sad I’m not feeling too great, probably lack of sleep and a sore throat and I’m finding it hard to settle him in the night after his feed. It’s easier to just close my eyes and rest.

He’s going to be 12 weeks next week so I’m going to try and get a decent routine sorted. With my eldest I had a routine much earlier.

How’s your little one doing @cheeseandwine2019

Oh no, it's so hard being unwell and having to look after babies. Hope you're okay! Sorry to hear that sleep has gone downhill, we have had a few good nights now - roughly 8-8 with two wake ups. I know this isn't going to last so making the most of it!!

We saw a lot of change when we put her bedtime earlier. I find a lot of advice online and in my books quite conflicting... some say 7pm and some say 11pm! We now try and put her down between (roughly) 7pm-8.30pm ish, depending on when she's woken from her last nap. We were often trying to squeeze in another short nap in the sling at that time but putting her in her bed for her "big sleep" seems to have really worked.

Out of interest, are you swaddling? We are but she fights her way out of it most nights and I think that's causing her to wake, rather than just milk! I probably ought to stop swaddling.... but I don't want her sleep to regress!! Confused

Wow! 8-8 with two wake ups is great. Long may it continue- I’ll keep everything crossed for you.

I feel like things are worse since his bedtime went a bit earlier. I bath both kids at 6 and DH puts the eldest to bed whilst I feed the baby around 7ish. I put him in the next to me at 7.30 and he’s just woken up- he’ll go for the big sleep around 8.30-9ish at the moment. However it can last until 10.30 or 1am- no pattern as yet.

I stopped swaddling him last week. He’s a big strong boy and I thought he was waking himself up by fighting out of it so last week we started using sleeping bags- which I was dreading and to be honest it’s not really made sleep any better but it’s one less thing to worry about at night! I miss how cute he looks swaddled though.

I’m planning on going to bed at the same time as him tonight and will try to be fully awake during each feed and possibly change his nappy on between each feed. (I did this when he was tiny- he’d feed from one side then I’d change his nappy and then feed from the other side and go back to sleep). Now DH changes him about midnight when he wakes for a feed and I don’t change him until the morning.

Ps the nappy changing thing mid was to trying to wake him a bit more so he’d take a full feed.

Hi, my 10 week old son comfortably started sleeping from 4-5 consecutive hours to between 6 and 7.5 consecutive hours at night. Here is what I did to help him sleep better. Every night we bath him at the same time -8pm (pretty standard, I think most parents use this as cue that it's night time); I leave a dim light on as I noticed he was grunting and straining too much if it was pitch black; I breasfeed him for an hour right before I put him down for the night (again pretty standard I think); I make sure he's warm enough - I put a wheat pillow in his bed to warm it while I'm breastfeefing and put him in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag(room temp is ~18C and he is wearing a long sleeve vest and sleepsuit) then I put a wool blanket over the moses basket to trap the heat. I should mention that at 10 weeks he already weighs a stone so his body is definitely ready for a long night sleep - I simply ensure the environment is right! I hope this helps a little bit...
