Sleep

7 week old napping in cot?

Rachel12551 · 05/01/2021 12:45

Hi

I have a 7 week old girl and we are getting into more of a routine with her naps and feeding etc.

I was just wondering whether it was safe for her to take naps in her cot during the day with the monitor on to watch her? Or is it too early?

She obviously sleeps with us in our bedroom at night but thought it might be a good idea to get her into her cot during the day as I can make it dark in that room and she would associate it with sleep?

I'm a first time mum so not sure if it would be safe or not so looking for some advice.

Thank you! Smile

We didn't do it as early as 7 weeks but we did let our DD sleep in next tome crib upstairs sometimes with monitor from about 3 months.
We mainly let her nap in Moses in living room though, or on us, or in pram/car seat so we didn't have a set routine.
She's 5 months now and we let her sleep upstairs from 7ish till we go to bed at 9ish and I still worry about her being on her own lol.
I'm FTM too so just been doing what feels right j guess and being cautious with what we do.

Thanks everyone!

In theory it sounds great but I do have quite a clingy baby so not sure she would even settle Grin

Eventually I would like her to be able to nap in there though Smile

We had ours in cot from day one. Neither liked Moses basket. I don't recall being told to have them in same room which now seems standard advice. We used to use monitor.

My friend in Denmark used to put her babies outside in a huge buggy for their daytime nap - no monitor outdoors obviously.

So I would be inclined to say they would be fine - but plenty will say it's dangerous. Mine had routine & slept well from the start.

Naps and night sleep need to be in the same room as you/partner until 6 months due to the SIDS risk. So if you use the cot for naps you need to stay in the room. It’s in the safe sleep advice

Mine slept in her cot from about 6 weeks, once my csection had healed sufficiently for me to get to her fast enough if she needed me.

Sure do :) my baby's cotbed is just 1 step away from my bed. Its very convenient for me to get baby out of it and put him back in. Moreover it has changer top which makes life easier with c/s.

This. A monitor isn’t enough

Thanks

I think I'll stick to putting her down in the crib downstairs with me until 6 months. I don't want to risk anything.

The idea is that the baby might need to hear you breathing to remind them to breathe. That's why you don't leave them alone to sleep before 6 months.

The advice is there to eliminate risk completely, but the risk is tiny. It is entirely up to you OP. Like a pp, I put my babies in their cots to sleep from 2 weeks, for naps and at night. I also put them outside in the pram during the day if the weather was fine. It worked for me, but you have to make decisions for yourself as to how you feel about relative risk.

It's amazing how guidelines change over the years.
20 yrs ago it was lie them at the bottom of cot on their front. If I can remember that far back.
Mine were in a basket for a couple of week. Then we put the basket in the cot (why I don't know)
By 2 months they were in cot in own room.
They survived.
Christ my 3rd was in a bed from 3 months as refused to sleep in the cot. Screamed all night if we tried.
She's now 21.
2nd one would only sleep with Bobo blankie over her face. Health visitor nearly had a heart attack 😂
She's now 23.
And whiskey on the dummy ....
sorry derailed thread

Yeah and I'm sure she would be fine but it's that risk isn't it! So many different rules to follow and things to remember - no one prepares you for all this as well as the worrying Grin

I think I've heard that before actually. Thank you

My mum says it to me all the time. Seems she had completely different guidelines when she brought us up Grin

My DS is 19 and the guidance about not sleeping on their own until 6 months existed then. It's been around for a while.

My baby is a little younger than yours.l at 6 weeks. We have a Moses basket in the living room and his crib next to my bed. I just move him around depending on where I'm going to be spending the most time. As a pp has said take a look at the lullaby trust for safe sleep advice

While putting baby in cot bed, you have to put baby in foot to feet position and cot bed should be in your own room. Thats in the guidelines. Guidelines never force you to buy different types of products. Those are favourable (recommended too) but not necessary. Due to one bed flat with no living room, I could only buy cot and thats doing wonders. My health visitor had no problem with it.

Seeline · 06/01/2021 14:22

It's not putting the baby to sleep in a cot that's the issue - obviously a baby can sleep in a cot. It's the fact that the OP won't be in the same room as a sleeping baby. That is against SIDS guidelines which say babies should not be left alone to sleep until they are 6 months old.
