Alternative to bed guard of under 18 months and co-sleeping

I’m happily co-sleeping with my bf 4mo (wish I had done it with my first); DH in another room. At the end of feb my close friend is having her second baby and I said we’d happily lend them our next to me cot; DS2 has never slept in it at night. I just assumed we’d buy a bedguard but it’s been pointed out that they’re not recommended for under 18 months. One side of the bed is already against the wall. The plan is for DC2 to go into his own room at 6 months but if this doesn’t pan out I’m happy to continue to co-sleep, but not sure what to do to prevent him rolling out. One idea would be to always swap myself back to the side that isn’t against the wall after I’ve fed him. Any advice from someone who’s been in the same situation?

Just put the mattress to the floor and store the base somewhere

@Cherrytreepuddle thanks for the reply, the only thing is it’s quite a big ottoman bed all our —shit— towels, bedding and my toiletries etc are stored inside it.

I rolled up towels lengthwise and put them under the fitted sheet at the edge to make a small bumper. But this was really for my toddler transferring from a cot to a bed , not a baby

(Long balloons worked too but she liked to pop them!)
