Sleep

Is it okay to do this

My daughter is 5 weeks old now and the only way I can get some sleep is if she sleeps on my bed. I have a large double bed and I sleep on top of the covers with her. I don't move in my sleep and I don't sleep too close. She sleeps on her back and I make sure the bed is clear and nothing can go over her face or anything. This is the only place she will sleep, if I put her in her Moses basket she screams and wakes up wriggling around as soon as I put her down.

Is this dangerous? Does anyone else do it. I don't see a problem with it, it works for me but I'm just scared because they say that this can cause SIDS??? I'm allready paranoid about it I'm always checking to see if she's breathing

What your doing is called co-sleeping, it does increase SIDS risk slightly, but there are guidelines to keep the risk as low as possible www.lullabytrust.org.uk/safer-sleep-advice/co-sleeping/

After thinking it through I decided to go down the co-sleeping route, I had no other factor that would increase risk and baby was probably safer overall with me not been sleep deprived, so able to function properly and avoid accidents.

Search advice on how to co-sleep safely. I did this nearly forty years ago so my advice is out of date. Dd also co-sleeps with her now nine year old. It's normal and healthy, cosy and good but you need to be aware of potential issues with new babies.

Parents - no alcohol, drugs or heavy meals before bed. Sleep lightly!
Pillows - none. I didn't have a pillow until dd was a year old.
Risk of falling, gaps to slip down - eliminate them.
Bedcovers - eliminate the risk of baby wriggling down under the covers.

People who know will tell you how they do it.

I do this with DS 8 weeks and have since he was born. Co-sleeping is the norm across many cultures and countries. Follow the safety guidelines and crack on!

Read the above guidelines and take the cover off the bed rather than lie on it as it can get wrinkled. Otherwise crack on. It’s the only way I got any decent sleep.

She should sleep on the hard surface of the mattress, not the soft quilt.

It's completely normal. I co slept with my first for 7 months. The only place he would sleep was with his nose next to my boobs! Look up the lullaby trust safe sleep seven rules and you will be fine.

I did this with my son 10 years ago and have lovely memories. My daughter was very happy in the cot from day one and I kind of feel like I missed out on this with her.
