Hello!

I've seen so many different sleep schedules and we want to find some recommendations for sleep patterns/training.

Baby not due for a few more months but want to get some ideas so we can put a rough plan in place.

Your baby will not have read any books.

Have a look at basis online for really good information about normal infant sleep and watch your baby not the clock.

Newborns don't tend to stick to sleep schedules.

OhToBeASeahorse Wed 30-Dec-20 19:52:13

Oh lord above dont start worrying yourself about that now. You cant really instil any kind of routine for 6 months anyway and you have no idea what your baby will be like.

Honestly it will be a total waste of your time and may well just add to anxiety around a newborn

There is no schedule! Baby napped in my arms while dp slept. Swap every few hours and repeat for 2 weeks! Breastfed 10-20 times per 24 hours as a newborn too. Very hard but gradually gets easier.

Emmaaa1990 Wed 30-Dec-20 19:55:06

Yeah no schedule! Our baby used to go to bed with us after her 10pm bottle and just napped periodically during the day. She slept on me for naps until around 12 weeks! I think until you hit the 12 week mark there is no point in a routine and sleep schedule! From then we implemented a bedtime routine and started putting her in her crib for naps she's been a great sleeper since then but at the start it's not something to worry about

Follow your babies schedule.

Mines 18 months. Sometimes he goes to bed at what I think of as bedtime. I imagine a consistent sleep schedule is still some way off.

Newborns don't follow a schedule or routine. For the first three or four months any attempts will just bring you stress and worry when they don't go to plan.

During that time you can do whatever you can to get baby to sleep wherever whenever they want. You can't spoil them or make bad sleep associations. After that you can slowly start to notice a pattern and encourage it.

Look up the fourth trimester. Human babies should still be in utero for the first few months.

Megan2018 Wed 30-Dec-20 20:03:24

Your baby will dictate it’s own schedule. Trying to sleep train a newborn is barbaric. You need to google the 4th trimester.
Feed on demand and sleep when they sleep is the only right thing to do.

MaizeBlouse Wed 30-Dec-20 20:09:55

Well I applaud your optimism but yeah don't schedule a newborn babys sleep. It's cruel, unnecessary and a total waste of time.

They'll sleep a bit, gurgle a bit, do a poo, cry a bit and then sleep again. This repeats about 20 times a day until they reach about 6 weeks and then they smile a bit too.

MobLife Wed 30-Dec-20 20:12:56

Do not even try to get involved with a sleep schedule 😂
Let them sleep when they need sleep-you'll get to know the cues
Sleep schedules are for much much further down the line

SallyLovesCheese Wed 30-Dec-20 20:13:50

Don't worry about it! Just let the baby dictate and sleep on you lots and enjoy the newborn cuddles because they won't last long!

Time enough for a sleep schedule when they're a bit older.

MyCassiopiea Wed 30-Dec-20 20:19:29

Honestly don't bother. Baby will sleep when baby is tired. There's no point in planning anything because it will not happen and you'll get frustrated. When your baby arrives you'll get to know them and can build a schedule around them gradually.

LittleBearPad Wed 30-Dec-20 20:23:04

Don’t try to create a schedule. It will make everyone miserable.

You’ll figure out their rhythm once they turn up

Respectabitch Wed 30-Dec-20 20:26:31

Newborns do not have a sleep schedule. Newborns do not get trained.

Babies sleep when they want to sleep and wake when they want to wake. Your job is to go with that.

Sleep/feed cycle for newborn:

Wake
Unswaddle
Feed
Wind
Nappy check/change
Swaddle
Reoffer feed
Lift to shoulder for final upright sway and wind
Put down with dummy in
Sleep

And repeat.

Baby is not really meant to be awake for anything much more than a feed as a newborn, then straight back to sleep.

Good luck!

Respectabitch Wed 30-Dec-20 20:29:51

Ps. Trying to "put a rough plan in place" for how a newborn will sleep is setting you and the baby up for misery. Babies just do not work like that.

Stop planning. Stop reading. Your baby will teach you what you need to know when they come, if you accept that your job is to listen.

My 18 month old hasn't got a sleep schedule yet 🙈

@FATEdestiny

Is that a joke?
Unless by sleep you mean lying by on you so you can’t move at all

My 6, 4 and 3 year old haven’t slept wouldn’t sweat it grin

@Cleverpolly3 if you read through this board Fate is very much in favour of the idea that young toddler should be sleeping through and babies should be put down to sleep.

Ginfilledcats Wed 30-Dec-20 20:35:32

My baby was born early June, this is my track of her sleep in October. Green is sleep, orange breast feed and blue nappy.

No pattern really, or starting to get to one maybe.

The first 3 months they sleep for like 20 hours of the day. When they want to. Just follow their lead. A pattern will emerge eventually

The second image is December, 6 months. Much more of a routine. I've done nothing but be guided by her
