Anyone else's child do this? It's happens for about a week almost every 6 weeks or so, he will wake up at 5am absolutely hysterical and nothing will settle him. Eventually he calms down but by this point me and DP are at our wits end. This morn for example he's had me in tears because he's pulled some of my hair out. We've tried everything from cuddles & a bottle to naughty step. We both work so not ideal going to work feeling stressed and tired. More so though, I am concerned my son isn't getting a full sleep as something is causing him to wake up very upset.

I just find it weird that it's not every single day but around every 4-6 weeks he will do this for 4-7 days consecutively and then go back to normal waking up happy at 6.30-7?

Does it coincide with teething? My boy twin sometimes wakes up early crying when his teeth are sore. I think he is crying because he is still tired.

Have you tried Calpol? It sounds like teething, my 22 month old has been doing this all year and eventually we always realise he was teething.

I wouldn't put such a young child on the naughty step, they can't possibly understand why.

Have you read about night terrors? He is about the right age. Naughty step is completely innapropriate for sleep issues. If it is night terrors, cuddles and bottle will not help. Maybe do some research/ reading.

I'm convinced my daughter sometimes has this. No amount of settling, cuddling etc helps. She's very distressed. Like she's not fully aware of her surroundings. Normally takes an hour and she suddenly is normal again. With us it doesn't happen at the same frequency. Once every month or so.

Do you have an adjoining wall with neighbours? Are they going to work very early one day a week and could be waking baby up?

Ours wakes like that occasionally, mostly at nap times rather than big sleeps. Tends to be if they've been accidentally woken from a deep sleep

@endofthelinefinally just read quickly about terrors and it doesn't sound like them at all. He is very much awake and upset rather than thrashing around. Also he is still upset and whingey all morning after until his nap. Obv still tired but will not go back to sleep. I think something is waking him up. Possibly teeth x

@MrsDeadlock hello we actually never hear our neighbours they're elderly and do not work. I'm worried we are waking them up actually 😫

DS does this from time to time - it generally seems to coincide with a developmental leap. He's obviously still tired but his brain seems to be working overtime and he can't get back to sleep - it happens to me too! I don't think of it as an issue per se, we just roll with it and then it settles down again. I just wish CBeebies started at 5am!

The one thing that caused our DS to by hysterical was trapped wind. You can tell as when held up (like holding under their armpits away from your body) they will crunch their knees up towards their chest. It can develop overnitght, my DS used to get it about 11pm. (feed at 6pm, then sleep, then wake up hysterical)

I only spotted it as I was walking him downstairs to get DH to help once and he did the most enormous fart and immediately settled.

If it is this its quite hard to get rid of - walking up and downstairs in a bouncy fashion sometimes worked as does holding them to your body an tipping them gently upside down, roll left, roll right, the upright.

My lad slept through from 3months so when we were hit with his molars coming in at 2, it was a shock to the system. My angel little boy was awake every night from 3ish, screaming the place down like he was possessed. We had to take it in turns to sleep on his bedroom floor and pat his bum back to sleep, if you stopped, he woke up, no matter how long hed been asleep. We just had to ride it out, took about 6weeks 😔 praying DD handles hers better!
