Sleep

How long did it take you?

... to stop giving in and bringing your LO in the bed during the night?

My 10mo always starts off the night in his cot but wakes so frequently and I always end up giving in and bringing him in the bed. Although sleep isn't any better in the bed, it's just easier to settle him.

I know I need to break the habit but it's just so hard. And I'm also back at work now so finding the time to be utterly exhausted for however long it takes to break the cycle is proving difficult.

Those of you who have been through the same, how many nights of persistence did it take?

Sorry forgot to add, he has his daytime naps in his cot too. I put him down awake and he is good at settling himself to sleep.

How regularly does he wake? Consistency for me was key, but I think I've been fairly lucky with my DS' sleep.

They're still young so if co sleeping is working for you, it doesn't have to stop yet, unless you want it to.

Hopefully someone will be along soon with some good advice for you. Just wanted to bump!

Thanks so much for the bump @baremineral 😊

At the moment, he wakes every 2-3 hours. And that's just the thing, co-sleeping was working just fine. Up until recently. He is still waking frequently even in bed with me! I just find it easier for the both of us to settle him back down if he's right next to me.
He has been able to settle himself to sleep for bedtime and his naps by himself for weeks now (previously he had to be rocked, then patted and shh'd). Now I am able to put him in the cot wide awake and he just nods off himself within 10 minutes or so.

I still end up sleeping with my son and he’s three. I can’t be bothered being tired and fighting with him, it’s easier just to get in bed and get some sleep.

@DonkeyMcFluff totally agree with you there. It's just that co-sleeping isn't working out well for us any more. Neither of us are getting great sleep whether he's in the cot or in the bed!

My son got in with us so frequently that we got him a 3/4 double bed. He goes to bed by himself but if he wakes up the parent on duty gets in his bed with him while the other one sleeps. It’s the only way we get any rest.

Hi there. Our DD was the same. We had a double bed next to her cot and she would come in the bed with me in the second part of the night. However she progressively started doing longer stretches of sleep at around 12 months when she started walking properly and attending nursery. Now at 16 months she generally does 8 or 9h in one go, alone in her cot without our intervention. Obviously this is not always consistent as she's teething ATM so nights can be a bit more rough. Try working on resettling gently ... putting him back in the cot ... etc ... but if he falls asleep on his own for naps and bedtime, that's very good, the longer stretches might come with age ;-) Good luck x
