Accidentally drank coffee - breastfeeding

So I didn't even ask for a decaf, I asked for a hot chocolate. I'm laughing at how stupid this is and how I didn't realise. DP ordered the new choc orange hot chocolate for me and the quality street latte for him from costa and gave me the wrong one. They give you an actual piece of chocolate orange to eat with it so I ate that first and then tasted the drink, so thought it tasted of chocolate orange and didn't question it as the latte was obviously sweet and flavoured too. I was driving also so wasn't paying too much attention to it till I got home and said I thought it tasted like coffee. By that point I had drank 3/4 of it and it was a large. I'm more impressed how DP didn't realise he was drinking an orange chocolate hot chocolate and not coffee 😂.

Anyway I'm breastfeeding my 6 week old and have only had one real coffee since he was born and that resulted in him screaming all evening that night like he had colic so I guessed the coffee was to blame. He sleeps so badly anyway and I've only had 3 hours sleep the last 2 nights so I'm dreading what it's going to do to him tonight. Other than chocolate I've pretty much avoided caffeine. I'm laughing at myself now but I'll probably be crying later 🙈🙈🙈. Just waiting for him to wake up and it to kick in now 😩.

There isn’t too much caffeine in a latte. I wouldn’t worry!!

I really, really wouldn't worry op. It's not like when you're pregnant - a lot less filters through with breastfeeding. I find it very unlikely the coffee is what caused the issue earlier. Also a latte is basically milk, not much caffeine at all! 🤦‍♀️

There is also caffeine in chocolate btw.

It'll be fine! I've never cut out caffeine through 3 children. I haven't necked espressos all day obviously.

I drank a latte last time and he was upset - hoping it was something else I ate that day that did it but know Costa shots of coffee that go into it are pretty strong 😬

In fact we have a joke in our house about how lattes are basically milk with a dot of coffee and for people who don't actually like coffee.

God I drank coffees multiple daily when breastfeeding. I'm sure OK.

To be honest sleep can't get much worse at the minute so fingers crossed I don't notice any difference

If it's anything like alcohol you'd have to drink buckets of coffee for any caffeine to be present in your breast milk. I drink loads of coffee and my baby is almost permanently napping! I think you might have just been unlucky last time.

Don't worry! I drank coffee every day with my youngest for over 2 years and it had zero impact. Hopefully that first time was just a coincidence.
Us mums need a bit of caffeine to survive!

Just have a nice little nip of brandy in your hot chocolate later and creep into bed with baby. You will both sleep like little tots.

Sorry but newborns just have bad nights. Unless in the case of true allergies - or you eating/drinking a bloody shit tonne of something - it is very unlikely anything you consume will affect your baby much.

6 weeks is one of the classic development leaps. There's another at 8 and then 12, then you'll be safe until about 16 weeks when it starts all over again. Just try and roll with the punches, you'll be reet x

I was advised to drink coffee after cs as it helps with constipation. One or two coffees is fine!

I have at least one a day and my 5mo.
I did always have had one per day during pregnancy too though, that was much less than usually 3-4.

I drank coffee as normal when breastfeeding. I also drank alcohol on occasion. No problems.

Is there any actual advice to avoid caffeine while breastfeeding? I’ve been drinking loads of tea and coffee, never noticed an effect on DD who is 16 months.

I had a gin in the bath most nights too!

You can drink coffee (and alcohol!) as normal whilst breastfeeding. The previous event was a bad coincidence! Enjoy a nice big latte guilt-free tomorrow Grin

@PinkDaffodil2 not to avoid, just limit. I'm only going off my previous experience and presuming the caffeine affected him as I've limited it so much during pregnancy and since he was born!

I remember reading something not that long ago (recently stopped b/feeding) that said there was actually no evidence that caffeine can get into your breastmilk from normal coffee/tea consumption. Remember it’s going into your gut and being metabolised by you first! It’s actually pretty nuts how women are made to believe all sorts of daft things about breastfeeding, like eating lentils and broccoli will give your baby wind etc. Same with alcohol, the amount you’d have to drink before your breastmilk is mildly alcoholic would kill you. Surely it’s a similar scenario with caffeine?
