Sleep

5 week old baby naps

Our baby is 5 weeks old and rarely sleeps in the day.

He generally sleeps from midnight to 10.30am with 3 or so breaks for nappy changes and feeds. He then might catnap after feeds and has recently taken to evening naps for 2-4 hours until about 8pm or 9pm.

I'm concerned that he should be having more naps in the day and that the evening naps will effect his nighttime pattern.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal and if I should think about waking him from his evening sleep to encourage him to sleep earlier I.e from say 10pm and get up at 8am or is it too soon to be thinking about all of this just now?

Many thanks! Haven't a clue with this and not sure where I can go for this info xx

Anyone? We're not getting any naps in the day at all atm which results in a very overtired cranky baby when he should be sleeping! He has all the sleep cues for naps but just won't sleep. Am sat with him in his crib just now, blackout blinds drawn and he isn't having any of it. Going to give him another 10 mins or so and then put him in his pram for a walk as he usually nods off that way

Use the pram / sling/ car seat/ let them nap on you.

They're tiny and have no idea that they are meant to sleep in a dark cot. I wouldn't even attempt any sort of nap routine or naps in the cot for a few months.

Is this any help?
huckleberrycare.com/blog/1-month-old-sleep-schedule-and-development

My baby is 5 weeks old and she doesn't have a routine or schedule atm, but she does tend to wake between 6.30am and 7.30am, and we are trying to settle her for the night from about 8.30-9pm, although it doesn't really work - she has reflux which makes it difficult Sad - and we often can't actually put her down until later.

If i were you I'd be aiming to bring forward the midnight-10.30am, maybe do it gradually by trying to wake baby a bit earlier each morning? (Eg 10am for a couple of days, then 9.30, etc until you are waking her at 8am) Wake by changing nappy, making sure there's lots of light etc. Ditto in the evenings if you want baby in bed for the night for about 9.30pm you'll need to make sure it's nice and dark

And to get baby napping during the day I'd just do whatever works; walk in the pram, put them in the sling, etc.

I'm no expert btw but DC1 was a terrible sleeper until we slept trained and i read a lot of theory... now I have to see if I can put it in practice with DC2 Grin Just want to get the reflux under control first.
