Sleep

When did your baby start sleeping for longer stretches at night?

DD is only 3 weeks old and obviously she is waking up on average 3 times during the night to feed. I know this is normal pattern in the first few weeks but was just wondering when your babies started to sleep for longer stretches?
Did you do anything specific to make it happen or was it just a natural progression?
Thank you

So around 3.5 months I stopped waking for a dream feed and she woke herself and had 2 feeds at about 1am and 4/5am. Then she went to one feed which was anytime between 1-4am then she didn't wake up one night for a feed. She is 6 months tomorrow and has not been fed in the night for the last 4 weeks. She will occasionally wake up but I leave her and she normally self settles back to sleep. Sometimes we get 11/12 hours straight.
However I do make sure she gets fed every 2.5/3 hours during the day to make sure she has enough calories - she has about 31 ounces between 7am and 7pm and has started lunch and dinner purée or baby rice xx

Possibly not what you want to hear... but DD started off like yours, but at about 3 months started sleeping for just 90 mins at a time. Didn't do longer stretches until we sleep trained at 6 months.

All three of mine went through a phase of waking hourly from 3 months until 9ish months. Then would do 3 hours from 9ish months to about 2 with occasional shit phases, then usually only 1 waking until just after they’d turned 3 when they mostly slept through. They were all breastfed and we coslept through necessity.

My children are arseholes about sleep though so don’t view this as normal.

Blimey Dmtush - I'm impressed you had the energy or inclination to have two more after the first one like that!!

DC is 19 months and wakes up at least 3 times a night

Not going to help you much as mine was quite unusual and started sleeping through 11 hours straight from 8 weeks. Not every night, but usually a few times a week - other nights he'd usually wake once or rarely twice. He even once managed 14 hours straight at 5 months!

We didn't try to get him sleeping like that, though blackout blinds have been a bit of a help

All three and mine were between 2-3 months.

11 weeks for eldest and 9 weeks for youngest. We did absolutely nothing to 'help'. Different babies do it at different times.

Neither of mine were big day time nappers which explained it.

I have babies, a 10 month old who started sleeping through when he went into his own room at six months but before that woke 2-3 times a night and a 5 month old who has slept through from 9.30 til 6 since he came to us at 7 weeks old (we foster). With my own kids DD slept through from about 6 weeks and DS slept through from about 12 months.

Mine slept well as newborn. Around 12 weeks it turned to shut unfortunately! He’s 20 weeks now and wakes 4+ times between 9-6am

Not until we sleep trained at 6 months and he started sleeping through at 11ish months.

Mine was about 4 years old when started properly sleeping all night! Horrific! Tried everything. That swaddling thing that the midwives do seemed to help.
She's 9 now and still not the best sleeper. Don't beat yourself up, sleep whenever you can during the day. Lie about and watch some box sets. Good luck!

DD woke every 90 minutes until she was 18 months old and didn't sleep through the night until she was 3

Same as @Caspianberg - good at the start and then 4 month sleep regression destroyed it all and we had hourly wakings to 8 months. Gradually reduced to 1 wake up at 13 months which lasted until 2 when he finally slept through consistently. DC2 is due soon and he’s just started waking again at 5am ish 🤦‍♀️

11months for longer stretches. Slept through at 17 months, once. Wakes between 1 and 4 times a night. Sorry.

My girl first slept from 11 to 5, so missing her 2am feed, at 11 weeks. Judging by those in her NCT group she was quite early. The rest seemed to be around the 4 month mark for dropping the middle of the night feed. At 16 weeks she went into her own room because she was consistently sleeping from 10 to 7, with the 10pm bottle being a dream feed after going to sleep at 7PM.

Anecdotally, I've found that breastfed babies wake more frequently than bottle fed babies.
Both mine were breastfed and woke every two hours until they were 6-7 months old. Then went to waking twice until 11 months when I stopped giving them a night feed and only offered water and a cuddle. They both slept through after only two nights of doing this.

Mine was sleeping consistently 8-10 hours without waking around 8-9 weeks and then consistently 10-12 hours around 3.5 months. I can't remember when 10ish became definitely 12ish but it was for sure by 5 months because we moved and I never did a night feed/went in during the night in the new house!. Somewhere around 3 months I stopped feeding between 7pm and 5am (or 6?, can't remember!). She would often get a feed around 6 and then go back to sleep until 8ish. The main thing we did was work really hard on getting her to go to sleep by herself at nap time, which I think then led to her being better at going back to sleep at night if she woke up, she is almost 2 now and still sometimes wakes up at night, but she virtually never gets upset. Sometimes plays with her stuffed kitty in her crib for a bit and then nods back off. We also kicked her out of our room at 3.5 months (staying with family and no space for a cot!) which I think certainly didn't hurt. I did also make sure she had feeds every 2-3 hours during the day, I think she could've stretched to 3-4 hours quite happily but might've woken up at night then.

My 18m old still wakes three times in the night for milk!

My girls slept through from between 4 & 9 months

He woke up once a night from about two months to four, then hourly from four months until we sleep trained at eight months - he's slept through pretty reliably ever since then (he's two now)
