over tired

help I need a rant as I am trying to keep so calm. I have been to a friends today with my dd 21 mths, I arrived at 11.30 and my dd had 15 mins sleep on the way over in the car. She normally sleeps for 2 hours after lunch but today was having none of it.....

I tried everything, a travel cot, push chair, rocking.....nothing. On my way home she slept for 20 mins in the car and now I am having real problems getting her off to sleep. She has eaton and had all her usual routine but will just not settle

I feel guilty for going out for the day, even though I did all I could to aid her sleep and now she is wired because I assume she is just so over tired..........

I have been in 4 or 5 times in the last hour offering more milk, cuddles and reassurance, bit at my wits end as I am shattered as my cat got run over last night and so upset about that and only got 4 hours sleep myself....

It's a PITA isn't it? You're just not expected to have a life at all. The smallest change can set things back for aaaaaaaaaages. I'm guessing that you didn't really enjoy your outing either if she was tired and cranky? I'll be surprised if I have any friends left when I emerge from this baby blur in a years (optimistic emoticon) time

Oh someone that understands , I just find this whole thing juggling dd and trying to do things so hard, I am really paying for it tonight and I just don't get it.

If she has had hardly any sleep then why is she still going now, it just makes no sense to me at all.....

Should I always make her sleep a priority?

poor you , madame. my ds is only 10 mths, but occassionally has hissy fit if he is overtired. if you know lo is fine, she may just need to get it out her system - very hard for you!

sorry about your poor cat too.

DD2 can refresh her self for hours on a 15 minute nap. She can take forever to settle soemtimes. Is your dd crying or just awake?? I just keep going in and eventually she settles. Just so she knows I'm still there. If I stay in the room she wont settle at all.

If not crying I'd leave her, but I assume she is.
So sorry about your cat.
Don't feel bad about going ouot, you have to stay sane.
Good luck, you could try getting her up for 15 mins then trying again, but don't do anything IYKWIM, just sit quietly with a book. I loathe to get them up again once they're in bed but if it's not normally a prob it should be ok.

i often become quite obsessed with ds's sleep patterns, because i know that if they are too disrupted, we'll all pay later! guilt doesn't make it any easier, does it?

sorry to hear about your cat
I know exactly how you feel. dd2 26 months is awful id over tired. I have just managed to see her getting tired and out her to bed earlky tonight at 6.10pm, usually 7pm.
I have real trouble taking her to friends houses cause she wont nap there and then is cranky. I'm sorry I have no advice as I was never able to sort her out really when this happened, just got angrier and angrier and gave myself a headache trying to be calm. she will go to sleep eventually.
for you

She is moaning and crying in between, certainly not going for it all out crying and the second I go in she is totally fine. I find this whole controlled crying thing so hard because part of me thinks she needs to have a good moan/cry and then go off to sleep but part of me doesn't want to dessert her. I have never left her more than 12 mins because as the norm she is pretty good but tonight she has now been awake for 1 hour 40mins since being put down........

Often they do cry to release tension and emotion before they go to sleep.
But we don't let them do it as it's seen as cruel. If she's not going for it I'd leave her a bit and see if she quiets, not for long obv. When dd2 is intermittent it means she's tired and is winding down.

how long would you leave her, about 10 mins?

doesn't help that dh is still not home from work and there is a storm coming....

10 mins sounds about right. It's raining hard here (London), you never know, the sounds of the rain might help.

very true, 4 mins to go. Its strange because although I hate the fact she is not settling I don't feel nearly as uptight as I used to get when she was younger.

Just don't like it but it's one of those things I guess.

Hope your evening is getting better madame. If it's out of character she must be unhappy about something. Hope it doesn't last and you all feel better tomorrow

madame - maybe the rocking lulled her into thinking that you would stay with her? maybe better to comfort from outside the cot? Esp since you know she quietens when you pick her up. Soo bloody heartwrenching this mothering lark isn't it?
Hi Ginger? How's it going for you? I hope things are improving for you. I think of you often and the fantastic support I got from SIFTW
