14 month old- have we messed up bedtime routines

Hi

Would LOVE any advice/tips on if this is a phase or I’ve made massive errors in bedtime routine!

My little boy is 14 months and has just this past week I’d say started to fight bedtime, once he’s put down he screams blue murder and there’s not a lot we can do to calm him down (other than pick him up and take him out his room to calm down). He’s not consistent with this as last night he went down without a fight but did wake up at 2 o’clock. He’s always been such a great sleeper, always settled well and generally slept through apart from nights we’ve been away or something or he’s teething. He is getting some more teeth through I think but I’m not sure this could be causing this?

The reason I wonder if we’ve messed up bedtime routine is that we’ve always given him his milk in his room just before bed, so I’m afraid we’ve associated settling with a bottle of milk and that’s wearing off now. I’m a bit scared to give it downstairs in case this totally puts us back even more! It’s always worked in the past with settling, so I’m not sure whether this is a phase or not really. He hasn’t always been sound asleep after his bottle, he has self settled a tad. But it has mainly been because he’s drowsy from literally just having had his bottle.

Just feel I’m at a loose end now and not really sure if we are doing something wrong. We’re expecting another in June so don’t want to mess up bedtime again if this is what I’ve done now.

Thanks in advance xx

Sounds like he's over tired by bedtime, so not enough daytime sleep.

What's his daytime routine like?

At the moment it’s usually waking up around 6.30/7. He will have his bottle and come chill in bed with me until we get up, sometimes he drifts off again for an hour. Then breakfast and usually playing until dinner time as if he’s woken up a little later which he sometimes has then he isn’t bothered by a sleep in a morning.

Usually dinner then a nap follows, anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.

The last two days he has slept through again, so we’re thinking it’s his teething as we saw lots of teeth poking through his gums at the back of his mouth. Still needing someone sat with him for 5 or 10 minutes whilst he drifts off but he’s in his own cot and seems to be sleeping again.

Thanks for your reply!
