Sleep

My 3 month old sleeping got worse

My LO has been pretty good and he had started sleeping through the night, dropping a feed which was great. Everywhere I read it says he should now be sleeping through and settling into a routine. Howeve, he seems to be doing opposite As he approaches 3 months next week. He has all of a sudden started fidgets so much during the night, kicking, flailing his arms, sucking his fists. He is waking up much earlier for a feed than he used to, and his day time naps have now turned into 20mn cat naps. He is happy enough, just getting grizzly around 5pm ish. Is this just a phase? Anyone else have or going through such a change.

There is a growth spurt at 3 months so that could explain him being fussy and needing extra milk at night. To be honest, babies go through all kinds of growth spurts and developmental leaps during their first year which mean that sleep goes up the swanny. I think you have to adjust your expectations of sleep somewhat!

My second baby also became a cat napper at the same age, it isn't much fun.

Gosh where have you read that they should be sleeping through at 3 months?
It could be a phase, the 4 month sleep regression was definitely a thing in our house. Also we had a bad regression between 7-10 months. Things seem to be improving now though Smile
Mine slept through 3 whole nights when he was 6 months. But then he reverted back to waking 4 times.

Fingers crossed your baby starts sleeping through

I'm sorry. My post sounds quite negative. That wasn't my intention. All the best x

I'm noticing exactly this. As per PP, I've decided to stop looking for patterns or routines and to not expect a full night (so when we get it, it's a bonus).

Hoping the more regular waking goes away as quickly as it arrived!

Have you had a read at Wonder Weeks?

My baby is doing exactly the same and will be 12 weeks next week. I have wonder weeks app and it explains developmental leaps and growth spurts and that it can disrupt sleep.
I'm not expecting my LO to sleep through until we start weaning at 6 months, she is EBF. If she does drop the night feed and sleep through then brilliant.
I've tried upping my LO feeds during the day recently to help her in the night, seems to have settled frequent waking in the night, she is only waking once now for her night feed.
Good luck, you're doing a great job!

My first baby slept through at 3 months, 12hrs! Is now 3 and self settles and sleeps all night.

Second baby (8 months) has always woken 4+ times a night, at the moment it's about 15 SadThey are all different.

Please throw away any books that say babies should be sleeping through at 3 months. Or they could make useful door stops Grin

Seriously through. Some babies sleep through at 3 months, a LOT of babies don’t. Many sleep through much later, towards a hear old. I was 10 months old when I did, my husband was 2 years old! I would say definitely don’t wait for it to happen as you’ll drive yourself mad. It may take a while however in your case it might be a phase and your baby might start sleeping through again soon.

Here’s a Brew for the sleepless nights x

There's a sleep regression at 4 months often. This, or a growth spurt, could account for the waking.

In my experience, most babies are not sleeping through at 3 months. Of my four, I've had two sleeping an 8 hour stretch by that age, but the other two were not. The ones who slept well at night barely slept at all during the day, and had completely dropped naps by 12 months. That's the trade off.

I'd suggest swaddling/wrapping the baby. Keep their arms tight but their legs looser. This may help with the flailing. Many babies still like to feel very secure at that age.

As for 5pm, that has always been "witching hour", in my experience. That's when I started the wind-down bedtime routine. I think it's useful to start habits as early as possible. So when you notice they're getting grizzly, that's a good indication that they're ready to wind down for the day. Bath time, lotion/baby massage, a feed and try to lay them down while they're still awake (more difficult than it sounds, I know!). This has worked a treat for my babies. Smile But remember, it's a bonus if they sleep through! Treat it as such. It'll only stress you out if you expect them to sleep through and then they don't.

Enjoy your baby. Flowers

It's probably due to a growth spurt OP, he will need more milk when these happen, and they happen frequently in the first year. Just when you think you've got it down it all goes tits up again.

Also Grin at babies should be sleeping through at three months, I should let 13 month old DD know she's very behind schedule! All babies are different and their needs are changing all the time, don't stress because your baby isn't doing what I book has said is correct, they can't read.

Yep, got the wonder weeks app. He’s just finished his leap 3. I do think aswell with everything their little brains are taking in, processing and developing it’s no wonder they are fidgety in their sleep. I think about when I had had an intense day at work, my brain would be buzzing and I would have restless sleep.

This is exactly what my almost 12 week old is like right now! I actually started a thread similar (but much lengthier! )than yours. I have read that the saliva glands are now developed/developing hence the sucking on the fist... My boy has started doing this I the last week or 2.
Is he in a moses basket or cot? Do you swaddle? I had literally just got my baby to nap well through the day and now we only have 45 min naps at the most!

He is now in cot as outgrown his Moses basket. He’s that fidgety he can end up in a completely different end to where he started. I did have the babymoov sleep positioned which helped, but after the recent scare story on the news I have taken this out. He has never been a swaddler, we tried on a number of occasions and bought all kinds of swaddle products but he hated it. I should have known when I was pregnant I would have a wriggler on my hands as he was constantly moving and kicking during pregnancy.
