11 month old being sick 2 hours after going to bed

Hi. Our 11 month old has had a bad D&V bug over the last week. She hasn't been sick during the day for the last 3 days, is eating a limited amount of food, mostly wants milk (formula), porridge and perhaps the odd yoghurt. Have tried her with toast etc which she normally loves but is flat out refusing it.

Anyway, she's really perked up in the last few days so we felt she was getting better. She's been taking a small amount of milk (2-3oz) before bed then waking almost exactly 2 hours later and being violently sick. She then screams for milk, if we give her it she's sick again within a few hours so the cycle continues!

Last night we refused to give her anymore and gave her some dilute squash instead (refused water), then had to resettle her several times. Poor thing was starving this morning.

Does anyone have any ideas what's causing her to only vomit at night a few hours after going to sleep? It's hard as she only really wants milk during the day and will inevitably wake hungry in the night.

Previously she slept all night without a feed, we were only giving her milk during the night as she was eating little and often throughout the day due to the bug.

we had this so I totally get it. Our doctor said that maybe the bug had caused a bit of reflux, or maybe it was post nasal drip.
I started probiotics and it went away

Thanks for the response. She actually has a stuffy nose so post nasal drip is interesting. We've also wondered if the bug has caused some reflux at night as she squirms for a good half an hour before waking then being sick.

What probiotics did you use? We're willing to give anything a try to help her.

I am in Switzerland so don't know if it's available in the UK. It's called Lactibiane and you just add it to drinks

Thank you. I will have a look to see if we can find anything.

Giving her a pillow to raise her head might help.

Thanks. She's in a travel cot in our room so we've raised one end of that with folded towels underneath the feet tonight.

If anythings likely to make her sick its milk. Quite often after a tummy bug you can be intolerant to lactose for a short time while all your guts bacteria resets. I'd prob avoid milkbat bed time and see how she goes. Might seem cruel when thats what she wants i know!

We found our DD developed a temporary lactose intolerance after sickness bugs. We didn't give milk for several days afterwards and then in very small quantities and watered down gradually building up to normal strength and portion size

I haven't had experience of exactly this but for other reasons was recommended Biokult probiotic - you can get it at Boots. It did settle my daughters tummy but her symptoms were v different.

Thanks for the replies.

The problem is the only thing she would take is milk. We've tried offering her favourite finger foods and just water etc, all refused. Eats porridge, yoghurt and milk. Doctor said better to give her milk than nothing. She keeps it down during the day and during naps but not at night.

Put her to bed last night with last milk 2 hours before. Woke within a few hours hungry, tried re-settling with water etc. By 1am when no one of us had really slept, I gave in and fed her milk, poor thing was starving. Then put her sleepyhead in between us in bed with a pillow under the head. No sickness. And finally some sleep for us all.

Probiotics are arriving today. Question is do we give her the last milk feed and prop her up again or go through lots of resettling and no slee until 1am. I guess we won't know until we try.

Do try the lactose free milk, you can buy it easily. I forgot that my daughter also developed temporary lactose intolerance after a bad bug.

We have a few unopened bottles of Colief around from when she was very small. Will try that in her milk for a few days as that should help to break down the lactose.
