7 month old will not settle

My 7 month old baby boy has never been a great sleeper, he suffered terribly with silent reflux up to about 5 months old when the paediatrician suggested we wean him. We had a few good weeks with the odd wake up at 4/5am but nothing unbearable...
Now all of a sudden he will not settle in his cot, he wakes up as soon as you put him down or within about 10 minutes and breaks his heart. I've tried putting him down awake something that never really bothered him previously now sees him sob and sob! I'm at a loss I go back to work in two weeks and am concerned this is here for a while. I have to be honest I'm not a fan of controlled crying, he's such a lovely, happy, placid little boy and has only recently started to cry more with this lack of sleep... We have an excellent routine in place at bedtime and nothing has changed - any help/suggestions or stories that involve the words 'it goes away quickly' will be really appreciated.

Have you tried making a nest out of rolled up towels under the sheet around him so he feels more snug and cosy in his cot?

Hey, I haven't but I will although putting him down is the first challenge. He's never needed anything previously so I'm not sure it's a comfort thing! A few people have said separation anxiety but he wont even settle with me just being in the room 🤔
