Bedtime trouble

My nearly 17 month old for some reason has now decided he does not want to go to bed. He idicates he is ready for bed by standing by the baby gate down stairs so he happily goes up until he sees his bedroom! Then into a crying fit! None stop for half an hour or so. If we go in, it doesn't make a difference. He used to settle him self asleep, i dont know what has changed. Is this a sleep anxiety thing?

What's his current routine like, in terms of sleep?
