URGENT: putting down to sleep without BF and night weaning

I'm going away next week for two nights. My DS currently has a BF before bed (but is put down awake) and when he wakes at night. My DH tried to put him down to sleep last week and DS was still awake when I got home at 9:30pm! He's been ill and teething for weeks now which doesn't help either.

Current routine: bath (every other night), PJs, story in room, feed, bed. What I'm thinking of doing is feeding him downstairs before we get him changed for bed to try and break the association between BF and bedtime. After a few days of this then giving him milk in a cup instead of BF, then getting DH to give him milk in a cup. He's not usually very good at drinking enough milk from his cup but I'm hoping he'll get the idea over a few days.

Does this sound like a sensible way to get him to sleep without BF?

Forgot to say that DS is 15 months!

I think that's a very sensible routine. I'd still try and get DH to put him to bed each night until you go away.

I did the same with my DD at the same age, DH put her to bed each night the week before and although difficult the first few nights, it soon became routine and when I wasn't there, it was no issue whatsoever, she went to sleep quickly, definitely out of sight out of mind!

Good luck

Thanks Ice! Did you stay away entirely when your DH was putting you DD to bed? I was ill a few weeks ago and DS was absolutely fine with DH, but he screams and just won't settle for him at the moment :(

I've bf both of my girls through toddlerhood to sleep, when I've not been around at bedtime dp has given a bottle of milk and cuddles etc instead following a similar routine to yours. Just make sure your oh does a few bedtimes so he and lo feel comfortable with their own way. I would stay downstairs or even pop out.

We did it recently with DD 16months, cold turkey as I unexpectedly had to go out at 5pm. She took water rather than milk from DH and it went well. So the next night we just offered her extra yoghurt at dinner and did the same again.
