Sleep

6 month still not sleeping through the night

Hi everyone, I need some help, please. My 6 month old still has yet to sleep through the nignt and I am getting less and less sleep. I have tried everything I can think of but he still wakes up 3+ times to feed. He eats 3 baby food/ cereal meals a day along with roughly 6 bottles of formula. He only takes 2 naps about 2 hours long each, a bath everynight with night time cream to help sleep. I really need my sleep and I would love it if I could get more then 3 hours of sleep at a time. Please any suggestions would be amazing.

Thank you

It's totally normal to be waking at 6months.
How are you feeding, and do you have a partner??
I just started going to bed around 8pm. DH would resettle until about midnight, then come to bed. With any luck, we then got to 1 or 2 am, and id had 5+ hours sleep. If you can find a way to get a stretch over 4 hours, I found that made the biggest difference. If bottle feeding, can someone else stay up to give the first bottle, or get up early to give the first bottle, allowing you to sleep longer?

My 4 year old still doesn't sleep through. 6 months is still very young.

Dd slept through, sometimes, from 10 months, ds same. But still lots of occasional night waking for the next 12 months at least.
I know this isn't in the least bit helpful but a lot of babies don't sleep through at six months.

Night time waking is completely normal in infants under one
It's bloody torture though-my son woke at least every 2 hours every single night until he was 1. He once did a 4 hour stretch at about 16 weeks old and I remember it vividly because it was such an anomaly!
In the end I just gave in to it and stopped trying to 'fix' his sleep, accepting it did make me feel a bit better! Also my DH would take him out to groups at the weekend and let me have a lie in, from about 6 months we also started alternating getting up in the night time (I was ebf before that so wasn't practical)
Good luck and remember 'this too shall pass'

DD1 (3) doesn't sleep through the night. DD2 is 19 months and has been sleeping through since 15 months. 6 months really is so very little, under 1's generally wake during the night.
Hang on in there.

I unfortunately do not have a partner, single mother here, so no help at nights. I wouldnt have an issue with him waking up if it wasnt for the fact that its like every 2 hours and sometimes he decides that he wants to play at 3-5 in the morning. Too bad he isnt the kind of baby that eats than goes back to sleep

How does he go to sleep at bedtime?

My DS started sleeping through at around 13minths. Before that he woke every 45mins and took over an hour to settle. He napped for 30mins at a time during the day.
It's really hard but it's normal not to sleep through. I am not single but OH didn't get up with him

Ah op that stage is freaking brutal....the wake up and let's play bit....it will pass I promisee. ....Ivery just come out the other end with mine at 15 months (don't panic it doesn't always take that long)

It may not be sleeping through the night straight away after this bit but that stage where they want to stay awake for hours is pretty tough but it is short lived and they revert to waking and going back to sleep quickly

Hang in there it will pass

It is hard but that's what babies do? Surely this is not a surprise to you?

Sorry but this is really normal.

Suggest you find ways to leave him happy in cot -so safe but occupied so you can get more sleep. A few (safe) toys in cot to play with when he wakes up? iPad with baby Einstein?

And 6 months is the worst of it - you're so worn down by no sleep for 6+ months and all the new mum hormones and energy you had at start has worn off. It'll slowly get better from here...

Mine didn't sleep til he was two, woke every hour. It's brutal, hang in there.

Just thought have you tried the double bedtime feed or a dream feed? Try feeding him before his bath and then again after at bedtime (so basucally feed twice 30 mins apart). Then, when you want to go to bed (say 9/10/11ish), half wake him enough to wake up to feed and give him another bottle then. As soon as he's resettled get to sleep yourself so you are getting max sleep to his next wake up.

My 7 mo old has a morning nap of an hour and a lunch time nap of 2 hours and she's up by 2.30pm latest. Bed at 7pm, dream feed at 10.30pm and then she sleeps till 6.30am ish.

So things to look at are the length and time of the naps. How much food he's having during the day and a dream feed. He probably doesn't need feeding during the night if he's getting enough during the day so I'd try resettling him without feeding him between midnight and 6am for a few nights to see if that helps. Also when he wakes up at night I'd give him 5 mins before picking him up so he has a chance to settle himself.

My 10 month old is up minimum twice a night (very rare) - last 3 nights he's been up every hour until 2am then sleeps til 5:30 when he's up for the day. I've stopped asking about other babies' sleeping patterns. Hope your DC starts sleeping better soon. I really don't think food makes a difference though - mine is on 3 meals and 2 snacks (and eats anything and everything) but hasn't made a blind bit of difference.
