2 year old scared to sleep!

My DS has always been a great sleep until last Saturday when my neighbours decided to have a fireworks party without telling us! He heard the bangs and was terrified and ever since then we have been having sleep nighmares. He still has a lunchtime nap, but we have to take him out for a lunchtime drive and get him to fall asleep in the car seat, then transfer him to his cot. Getting him to sleep on a night is a real struggle. We have to stay with him until he's properly asleep and then creep out of his room. He used to fall asleep so easily but its getting to the stage when it 8.30 and after before he's going to sleep and its just exhausting. We've tried giving him a bedtime bear who we've told him will keep away the bangs and have even moved his cot so that he can't see the window where the noises came from, but they don't seem to be working. He keeps saying 'mummy scared' and 'no bangs' which is just heartbreaking. DH and I are shattered and our nerves are shot with having to creep around all the time. Does anyone have any advice as to how to help him get over this?
