Moses basket matress - too big

I'm now 38 weeks pg, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my first after years of infertility and treatment.

We have very little spare money to buy baby things but friends and family have been really generous a and given us a second hand pram, Moses basket and cot.

In one of my more stressed out moments I went out and got a new matress for the Moses basket. I got home ripped the packaging open on the sheets and matress only to realise that I've got the wrong size - it's a few cm to long for the Moses basket. It fits width ways. It wasn't cheap to buy - I wanted a decent matress. Mothercare won't let me return the matress and sheets now they are open.

Is it safe to have a slightly to long matress? it's not completely flat at the head end, curls up just slightly. Or do I need to buy a new matress? We really don't have much money right now - Im stressed out by this - don't want to risk my precious baby, but can't afford another matress.

I'm no expert obviously but I'd say it's fine, can't you make it curl up at the foot end instead of where the baby's head would be? I suppose how much it curls up? Can you post a photo?

Not sure you are going to be able to see this properly but here goes... I thought leave the curled up section at the head end as baby will be feet to the base of the basket and head will be a long way from the head end of the basket. The matress otherwise lies flat.

I honestly wouldn't worry about that, I know it goes against all the advice given though. But I would probably leave it at the foot end though if possible just to be safe. Are you able to sort of punch it in any more than it already is? How expensive was the mattress?

The matress was £25 I think and the sheets ?£12 more. That's a lot of money for me right now. I'm trying to be so careful. It's heart breaking not to be able to buy my baby all the wonderful things I want to but we've had so many unforseen disasters we've gone from being comfortable to not being able to afford the simplest of things.

Only asked about the price because if it was one of the pricey ones you could always try selling it on Facebook for example, since it's never been used. Then you could use that money to buy a new one which was a bit cheaper. I bought a Moses basket mattress on Amazon for £10 and it was amazing quality!

Thanks - I wanted a decent quality matress so went to a specialist shop... If the Amazon ebay mattresses are ok I might do that. Or a supermarket. Just don't want a heap or dangerous matress.

Aw your baby won't care about all the wonderful things you could or couldn't buy! Your baby will only care for your cuddles and loving care honestly I've got two kids and the amount of money completely wasted on them as babies gives me heart palpitations! All they need is a clean and safe place to sleep, they need milk and lots of your love!

Yes you can get a much cheaper and still completely safe mattress for cheaper. I think Tesco's sells some too. I only went to buy a new mattress for our Moses basket because I didn't like the plastic one that came with it. The one I bought was called Mother nurture but Amazon sells lots of different ones. Try selling your old one with the sheets too, since they are brand new I can't see why someone wouldn't buy them.
