Can my baby sleep on a blanket?

DD hates her cot, probably because she'd rather be cuddled which is fine but not always practical. Sometimes she will settle in her carrycot (with a proper mattress) but sometimes she wakes up the second I lay her down, I imagine because the cold hard surface feels quite abrupt after Mummy's soft warm skin.

I've just tried her laying on a fleecy blanket which is completely tucked in - in effect the same as using a sheet. And she's settled fine. I've just put a muslin over her as I imagine the blanket will make her hotter than her usual cotton sheet. Is this okay in terms of safe sleep guidelines? There's no loose fabric that can go over her face, she's just laying on a different surface.

That's how my winter baby slept for the first 6 months of her life, we had blankets instead of sheet for Moses basket and pram, much cosier.

Given how hot it is you'd think she'd hate it but she likes to be cosy. Unlike my eldest who kicks a blanket off the second you put it on her!

Did anyone - midwife, HV etc - ever say anything about your DC sleeping like that?

I put layers of softer blankets under my babies sheets and rolled up ones along their sides in the basket and tuck them in nice and snug which is completely against guidelines so I'm not telling you to do that;)

Make your own judgment of what works for your baby and keep a good eye on them regularly. Even with all the correct blanket protocol in place I've found mine managed to wiggle sideways and sleep with its face covered on numerous occasions.

Funny aren't they, that winter baby, now a toddler, never has even covers on at night now!
No, no-one ever said anything, infact until i read your post I hadnt ever even questioned it.I don't see how it is any different to sleeping on sheets, they 're both tucked in the same way.

My 4mo is currently asleep on a blanket on the sofa next to me. It's tucked around the seat cushion so is tight and she has been napping for 2 hours so far.

Perfect! When the alternative is sleeping on my chest when I'm also asleep, I think being cosy on a fleecy blanket is the way to go.

Thank you everyone!
