Sleep

settling toddler into new room

I'm about to embark on moving my (almost) 2 year old into his own room to make room for my 3 month old to go into the nursery.

We've bought a single bed. Currently toddler is in a sleeping bag and Cotbed. Should I keep him in his sleeping bag for a little while in his new bed? Wondering how on earth it'll work. He's never had a duvet and pillow before.

Any experiences / tips would be great to hear

Personally I wouldn't do new room, new bed and new bedding type all at the same time.

I would initially move the cot into his new room and keep him in sleeping bag in the cot. Then after a few weeks change the sleeping bag to a duvet and pillow. Then make the cot to a bed - this is a big change so don't underestimate how difficult a toddler may find this. Give him a while to get used to the toddler sized cotbed, then move to a singe bed.

Personally I'd keep baby in the cot-as-a-bed for a good amount of time, so would buy baby a new cot.

I would consider it unsafe to have a toddler in a bed wearing a sleeping bag. because in a bed the child can get up and walk around the room, which would be dangerous when wearing a sleeping bag.

We've tried and failed op! Well tbh we didn't try very, very hard as ds (2.3 years) was quite resistant and sleeps so well in his cot. We also have a 7 month old dd and the original plan was to move ds into the toddler room and dd into the nursery. Dd is sleeping badly and ds isn't keen on sleeping in the new room so we've kept the status quo. Ds in the nursery in his cot and we've now got a cot for dd in our room where she'll stay until she's 20. We have been thwarted by both children.

Shameless place marking for ideas as the toddler's room really is nice! Our thoughts are to either leave sleeping toddlers lie or do as FATE suggests and move the cot into the toddler room so he gets used to the room first then work on the bed later.

Thanks both. Hadn't thought about trying the Cotbed in the new room for a while, rather than going straight into a single bed. Good idea. Hmm, may have to look into getting a cot for the baby and keep him in with us a bit longer. Have a feeling the toddler transition might take longer than we think!
