Sleep

too much sleep?

Hello Smile

I have an 11 day old baby boy and I know this sounds ridiculous but I'm worried he sleeps too much.

He will sleep for hours on end and wake up when he's hungry but in the night we have to set and alarm clock to get him up to eat. Every where we go people say 'ooh he's good' or 'oh he's a quiet baby' and it's making me wonder if he is abnormal! Confused

Anyone else experienced the same thing?

Why are you setting an alarm?! It's normal for such a young baby to sleep most of the time. Perhaps get some reassurance from the midwife?

Make the most of it,he'll sleep less as he gets older.

Newborns sleep for about 22 hours out of every 24, so its entirely normal.

it will soon change though and you'll be posting on here about not enough sleep

When a newborn baby isn't feeding he/she should be asleep. It will change, fear not. But not for a few weeks yet

Bacon, we set an alarm because he was sleeping 11pm - 8am when he was first born and we let him sleep through but he had lost 7% of his birth weight at 3 days so we were told to wake him to feed. Plus he was quite jaundice and feeding helped flush it out. He doesn't sleep that long now but he hasn't put all of his weight back on.

Also thanks for the reassurance everyone! I feel like a neurotic mum worrying about how much he sleeps but I guess it's just how it is for a little while. I will make the most of it while I can!

As long as he's putting on weight properly then I wouldn't worry. My ds was tiny and was still losing weight at 10 days old, so I was advised by my midwife to wake him every 3 hours and feed him. As soon as he started gaining weight we would let him sleep as much as he wanted to. (My god I miss those days sometimes! Wink)

Thank you, Archiesmamabird!

He's started putting weight on now so ill take your advice. He was 10lb 6 when he was born so I'm sure he had a bit to lose anyway!

Hi, I was also told to wake my newborn every two hours when I bought her home! Seemed crazy setting the alarm to wake her! Now I wish I had to set the alarm to wake her! Wink . I remember she also used to do nothing but sleep all day so honestly in my opinion I wouldn't worry!

My DD just turned 11 months and I still get a bit envious reading these threads! My lovely sleepy newborn did NOT get the memo about newborns being sleepy! Sounds like you are doing great so enjoy your lovely squishy sleepy newborn.

Fair do's. Not neurotic, we all worry but honestly newborns do sleep a lot! Hope you feel a bit less anxious.
