Sleep

10 month old waking up in the night

My son has started waking up in the night rolling around in his cot and trying to crawl, sitting up, banging his head....

He settles if I lay him next to me - he will then sleep for hours! Is this a sleep regression? Him wanting cuddles? Should I ignore him? Help!

It's not unusual when babies learn to crawl (and pulling up to standing) that they go through this.

I wouldn't call it a sleep regression, more a behaviour issue - baby needs to be taught that while crawling and climbing are great, but the cot isn't the time/place for it.

If your DS progresses anything like my DD, we have spent several weeks now having to keep diligently lying her back down in the cot. She's just about got it now and is starting to be more still again in her cot. 6 weeks ago though, like your DS, we had lots of problems with her moving about, crawling, climbing, banging her head/feet on the sides of the cot and so on.

Another way to deal would just be to leave baby to get on with it once in the cot and ignore until they get bored and settle to sleep. That just wouldn't be something my DD would do, she'd end up screaming. So I would just keep on lying her down and lying her down and lying her down again until she got it.

My DD is liking being swaddled and that is helping, but I appreciate this is unusual for older babies.

My very active 9 month old does this. She likes to sleep on her front so I lay her on her front and stroke and shush a lot. I have to kind of gently pin her down to stop her trying to get up to crawl or climb around the cot. I put one arm underneath her and put my head close to hers. She usually (not always!) falls back to sleep.

Thanks antihop. It's a nightmare trying to get him laying down and asleep, he's so distractable, he just keeps sitting up, rolling around etc. He has stopped waking in the night tho now - phew!

Not been on MS for a long time and popped on cos I'm having exactly the same issue! DS1 is 10 mth tomorrow and has been sleeping through since 6 mths. These last 3 nights he's woken around 2.30am crying and inconsolable; the only thing that settles him is milk. But I thought we were so past that stage.........sobs

My 9 month old just started doing this. Glad to hear that while annoying it's not weird or unusual (my hv lives in a world where every 6 month + baby sleeps 12 hr solid or they're weird).
