3 month old - sleep training?

Any tips for getting 3 month old to:

  • go down at a reasonable hour (he has a bath every night, milk in his room etc so has a routine but not sleepy at bedtime)
  • self-soothe in the night. He's a chubby baby who doesn't wake for milk, just for comfort when his dummy falls out...

What's his feeding and sleeping like in the daytime?

Can he self-sooth during the daytime?

Wakes up at 7:30ish. Stays awake for a couple of hours then has a feed and has a nap (either in chair or buggy). Awake over lunchtime then has a long nap in afternoon again. It's difficult to get him into a proper routine in the day as I also have a toddler so baby has to fit in around her really Hmm

No he doesn't ever really self-soothe. Always needs cuddles, rocking or dummy..

What time does he wake up from his afternoon nap? I always made sure my DS was awake by 4pm to ensure he was sleepy by 6:30/7pm.

Would something like the sleepy tot help him find dummies at night so he doesn't need you to replace them. We have one (actually 3 now) and whilst ds is not a great sleeper it helped loads.

Google sleepy tot

I'd do routine , sing, wrap, dummy, put in cot and sing and pat. Do not lift baby again. Roll on side and pat (roll back to sleep). No rocking, cuddles. Will learn to settle with a pat or a hand on tummy in a few days. He may cry as you pat for 10 mins at first but for us less crying than we had with overtired baby who couldn't get to sleep

My DD is also 3 months (14 weeks) and I have three other children. Personally I wouldn't be considering sleep training at this age.

Dummy and bouncy chair are good ways to help your DS get to sleep.

Until only very recently my DD was having all of her daytime sleeps in the bouncy chair or pushchair - which isn't any problem for me. Over the last few weeks I have started putting her down in her cot (with dummy) to settle. I have to stay with her for 10 minutes or so to keep reinserting dummy if it falls out, until she is asleep. If she starts crying though I don't persist, she just gets out into the bouncy chair and bounced to sleep instead. She settles in her cot only about half the time at the moment.

What were you thinking about in terms of sleep training at this age?

Is your DS sleeping enough? How often is he waking in the night?

Settle for all naps like this. First nap of day is easiest to get to sleep so helps baby learn routine . All naps in cot (unless like you need to go out eh).
