I thought I would give an update and diary of our CC as it seems to be a success !

I decided to start it last friday after 8.5 months of my baby waking up every couple of hours for warm milk.
I have tried EVERYTHING other than CC to soothe him, tried every medicine for his teeth, nothing would stop him crying apart form warm milk.
He eats 3 massive home cooked meals a day, drinks plenty of water and is very well and happy.
After another exhausting night and a desperate post on mumsnet I decided to do CC.

I was a bit dubious about the whole thing, and so worried about having to let him cry as I just can't stand it when he is upset but today day4 I thought I would share my experience and maybe help other mothers out there.

He goes to bed at 8pm. Has one big 2 hour nap during the day around lunch time or 2 naps of 1 hour each depending on what we are doing. He eats 3 meals a day, drinks plenty of water, has a bottle of milk in the morning and a bottle in the evening.

Night 1.
He woke up at midnight and it started.. I let him cry for 5 minutes then went to stroke his head, 10/ 15/20 mins. And repeated. Sometimes offering water (I was worried he might be thirsty). He cried for 1h30 and cried himself to exhaustion. It was horrible and I really wasn't sure about what I was doing. He didn't wake up for the rest of the night which was already a massive achievement.

Night 2.

He woke up at 2am and cried for 1h45 minutes. Each time I stroked his head and tried comforting him he screamed even louder. Really tough night. I sat beside him in the dark and waited for him to calm down. Offering water a couple of times, making sure his dummy was within his reach. Cried himself to exhaustion. Was still really unsure about what I was doing but determined to give it a proper go. I limited my touching him as it seemed to upset him more but I stayed near him.

Night 3.

He woke up at 1am and cried for 20 minutes. He then woke up at 430 and cried for 10 minutes. The second time I didn't go to him I just waited and he fell back to sleep on his own.

Night 4.

Bed at 730/8pm. Woke up at 9pm and cried for 40 minutes...and slept through until 8am.

Really pleased. He seems really rested today.

He is been exactly the same during the day since we have done CC. He eats as well, laughs, plays etc.

Hope this helps some other desperately exhausted mothers out there !

Well wasnt I cocky yesterday !

Night 5.
Tonight hasn't gone very well...
Bed at 8pm- cried for 15 mins at midnight and settled.
Woke up at 4 and has been screaming ever since. I have 'given in' and taken him in our bed for a cuddle. Its so hard! He stopped crying immediately and is just chilling on my chest. Awake! Hope it doesn't undo what I did so far.

So tiredSad

Put my beautiful little boy to bed at 8 and..... he just woke up 12 hours later.

HE SLEPT THROUGH ! SO happy. Compared to waking up every 2 hours 6 nights ago, I might be getting somewhere?

I am reading this with interest.
My LO is 15 week old.
He is terrible cat napper (max 20 mins) & cries a lot during the day as a result of being overtired.
He only naps on my knee or in his pram if I take him out for a walk.
On a night I have to rock him to sleep initially however he settles himself after his night feed in the early hours.

Ah thats tough... 15 weeks is still so little. I tried leaving my boys ' on their own' as much as possible in the house when they were little to get them used to the idea i can't always be there. So in the pram, in his bouncy chair, on a mat, and always where they could see me or hear me. They would fall asleep quite easily, I dont know if this helps?

Tonight is my last night of CC update as I think I read it should take about a week. So if he sleeps through again tonight, thats it ! Fingers crossed !

I'm also watching with interest as have started my own variation of cc with 9 month old dd today as I am rocking her to sleep for naps, bedtime and all night time wake ups. Trying not to leave her crying for too long though just 2-3 minutes at a time then shush pat and repeat.

Really pleased things have gone well for you op. I am attempting gradual retreat and finding it heartbreaking but it does seem to be working and dd's sleep is already a lot better. littlebru your lo is so tiny still, and sounds completely normal. Cc shouldn't be used under 6 months and a lot of people will say a year. My 8 month old had never settled herself to sleep before this week. Have you tried using a sling to get your lo to nap longer in the day?

It is so hard to just listen to them cry. Even if Im holding him or stroking his head I just want to give in so badly and get him milk, the first 3 nights were such a nightmare. Whatever method you choose, it will be the right one.
I knew with mine that I had to be tough, not hold him, just check he's ok and then let him cry it out. Rocking to sleep and gradual retreat all sounds fab though.

Pfff here I am giving advice and he's only slept well for 2 nights !

Lets see how tonight goes, good luck to all of you doing more or less the same thing !

Littlefrenchmummy sorry what I meant was that I have been rocking to sleep for 9 months and now want to stop this habit so am trying my own version of cc to try to get dd to self settle. Done it for her 2 naps and bedtime today, nap 1 took 45 minutes, nap 2 33 minutes and bedtime 22 minutes. May be a coincidence but I'm hoping we've made a bit of progress already.

Ohh sorry I misread! Thats great you are making progress :-)
Thats how it was for my baby, gradually cried for less time. Its tough that he also cries at nap time, mine never did that. Wishing you all the best for tonight !! xx

Yes cries whenever I try to get her to sleep even though she's tired! I'm hoping I don't crack in the night, her crying seems so much worse in the night than during the day.

Night 8.

Bed at 745.
Woke up crying at 10pm. Gave him a bit of water and went straight back to sleep.
He then woke up crying at 3am, gave him a bit of water and he went straight back to sleep.

So not sleep through but such an improvement.

I dont know what to think about the water... Am I just swapping the milk for the water? But then giving a bottle of water that is just there is ok I guess its not like getting up and making a warm bottle of milk? But then Im giving in to another ' soother ' and Im still being woken up and he isn't doing the 12 hour night he should be doing.

Should I go cold turkey for the water too and do it for another night?
Or should I just let it go?

Thanks !

Last night DD woke for less than a minute at about 9pm then woke at 12.15am. I gave her some milk as was worried she was hungry then she self settled and slept until 6.15 which is a major improvement. It only took 4 minutes to get her to sleep this morning too.

I'm not sure about the water thing but am thinking of trying it. I think if they continue to wake after a week or 2 cold turkey may be better though?

Thats great Rtfairy ! How old is your little one already?
I was always worried mine was hungry too but taking a bit of perspective based on what he eat during the day there is NO WAY he is hungry.

Yes Ill give the water another week and then take it away...God I feel like the bad guy !

She's 9 months. Usually I wouldn't worry about her being hungry but yesterday she refused most of what I gave her so thought it could be genuine hunger. Don't feel bad, just think, what is the alternative?

Report
Littlefrenchmummy · 12/09/2014 12:21

AH yes then I would have been worried she was hungry too.
Well no alternative to water ( he has a dummy he loves), I think the alternative is SLEEP !

I think we should keep this thread for when they are 18, showed them just how much we cared and tried haha !

How was your night? Put DD in her cot at 7.30, she grumbled for 3 minutes then went to sleep! She woke up briefly at 11.30 and stood up in cot but went back to sleep easily when I led her down and shushed her then slept until morning. Such a massive improvement in just a couple of days I'm amazed Smile

Hello !!

After 2 months nearly I thought is give an update !

My little boy who is now 10 months sleeps from 730-8 everyday !Grin
He has the odd night where he wakes up due to teething. Generally a bit of water/ teething granules and his dummy does the trick and 2 min later he's back to sleep. Its amazing.

There is hope!

All the best for the other tired mummies out there xx

That sounds great! Unfortunately it didn't work long term for my little girl and we are back where we started (several night wakings). I think she may be teething at the moment though.

So after letting her cry she slept better for a few night and then started waking regularly again or did she never stop waking? Thats rubbish sorry you must be so tired...

Yeah she slept better for about a week then started waking again and wouldn't go back to sleep for hours so I kind of gave up on the cc and started Co sleeping which isn't ideal for me at all. I'm just hoping she'll grow out of it eventually.

Ahh yeah co sleeping never worked for me neither. You must be tired..
Maybe try CC again when you feel ready. Its so different from one child to another, maybe she will just grow out of it.
I just knew my son had gotten into a bad habit of waking for milk to soothe himself. I knew it was a habit and nothing else so I knew it needed to be broken but maybe yours is just different.

Wishing you all the best ! X

Hi littlefrenchmummy pleased for you that ds is sleeping so well.
Out of interest what naps does he have? Do you wake him in a morning? Or wake him from any naps?
My dd is almost 8 months and I'd love it if eventually she went to bed a bit later and woke later! At the moment she's waking earlier and earlier and her naps have become short again. I'm hoping it's just a developmental thing that will pass soon but she had a massive sleep regression at 4 months and I'm noticing similar pattern happening again now Confused

Wow this sound such a success story, sadly we have not managed to be as successful despite trying our hardest.

DD gets into a dreadful state, often vomits and ends up soaked in sweat and dribble, did this happen for you ever?

Nothing is helping us with her and we are finding it mega challenging now!!

Please can I ask, did you just do cc at night or in the day too? Is there a right or wrong way to tackle the day time naps as if anything these are more of an issue than night. Is it ok to start off just doing it at night?

I'd be really interested to hear your advice on this. Thanks for sharing a positive experience thoSmile
