Pick up put down for naps

Has anyone used pick up put down to break booking to sleep for naps? I feed to sleep for naps and nightime. But want to tackle naps first.

Any success stories?

I feel like this is a middle of the road approach between CIO and no cry nap solution. Can't face cry it out but fear no cry nap solution could take a while.

Please help by sharing your experiences as feel anxious about the whole sleep situation.

How old?

I find pick up down doesn't reduce crying and is just torture.

Thank you for posting this, I'm about to start PUPD tomorrow but am really nervous about it and don't feel fully prepared yet, so I'll watch and see if anyone has any magic answers.
How old is your DC still? Mine is 5 months. I've actually decided I'm happy to do CC once she's 6 months, I know so many people who've had great success with it that although the idea of her crying breaks my heart, I think 2-3 days of heartbreak is worth it for a future of good sleep. Both DP and I are nearing the end of what we can take.

Hi Kiki and great hunt,

Thanks. She's 5.5 months. I feed to sleep for naps and nightime. I just feel I need her to self settle at some point.

My plan is to wait til she's on two naps and three meals then try her with self settling. I can't face it for three naps a day and can cope with doing it for two naps a day.

Going to try naps first as hoping this will improve bedtimes.

I feel so anxious about it though. Pupd or no cry nap solution is what I need to decide.

Help!

We didn't do proper pick up put down but have had some success recently. We do usual bedtime routine then put him down to sleep saying 'night night, go to sleep' (or 'time for a nap') in the day. Then stroke him gently and hold his hand and shush gently but try not to pick him up at all unless he really works himself up. First couple of nights he cried for about 10 minutes but he would switch off suddenly and fall asleep.

Now he mostly moans to himself a bit for 2-3 minutes then either dozes off or calms down and drifts off on his own. I can't believe it's worked as he was taking hours to get down or was bf'd to sleep until recently (he's just turned 5 months) but it's also had a really positive effect on his sleep overnight and he has gone from doing 90 mins/2 hours a time to only waking once or twice a night so not perfect but a huge improvement!

I couldn't bear the thought of cc or cio but this has really worked and we're still there to comfort him and let him know we're there for him and he cries less than during my attempts to rock him to sleep without breastfeeding!

Gosh well done you. Perhaps that's worth a try. So at night do you breastfeed him and then put him in awake and then ssh him?

Yes. I breastfeed him in the living room before we start the bedtime routine so I can't be tempted to feed him almost to sleep (sooooo tempting!) then take him up, put on his projector with some music and get him into his pjs then put him down. He still has off days and is harder to get down but the good days are more frequent. If he cries hard for more than a couple of minutes I pick him up for a quick cuddle! I also feed him back to sleep overnight when he stirs, can't face it in the night yet! But as he wakes less often it's not so bad.

I don't want to suggest it's going to work for everyone as all babies are different but I was so sure it wouldn't work and have been pleasantly surprised!

Ps - I also use the buggy for at least one of his naps per day to take the pressure off a bit.

With dd from about 5-6 months I would feed her before a nap then pop into her cot (making sure fully winded) in her room which had blacked out windows and white noise. Then I'd leave her with her seahorse which played music and she would occasionally fall asleep. Other times she wouldn't so I would cuddle. I just kept doing that and that was it.

Thanks greathunt,

Think that's what I will do actually. Feed her, then put her upright and wind and then put her in and leave her. If she cries just go in and give her a cuddle.

Gosh I'm nervous hope it works. I'm starting it in the morning. She has 3 naps so will try to do it for the ones which she takes in her cot.

So it obviously worked for you then.

She's Berber had white noise or blackout so won't try that but will feed her downstairs nor in her room.

I would try black out or at least draw the curtains in her room.
