Need help getting one year old into his cot !!

My son is 1 in a few weeks and I am trying to transfer him into his cot after co-sleeping, what works??
He will sleep in his cot but won't stay in it for more than a couple if hours at a time, he seems to be bumping his head on the bars then waking, I've tried rolled up blankets etc but I'm reluctant to use bumpers as it's a hazard.
