Just wondered when you moved your little ones into their own room? My dd is only 8 weeks so not ready yet but she will definitely outgrow moses basket before 6 months and the cot is already assembled in her room. Would it be worth buying a crib or cheap cot to put in our room once she outgrows moses basket but before she's 6 months? Or would it be ok to put her in her own room when she's around 4 months even though guidelines state 6 months? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
The SIDS advice is because prior to 6 months, a baby doesn't have the breathing reflex & they need to be 'prompted' to breathe - no-one knows whether it's the change in oxygen levels or the baby hearing mum breathe that prompts them. Personally I wouldn't put a baby in their own room prior to 6 months, but then I co-slept from 3 months so what do I know eh
These threads annoy me, the guidelines are there for a reason. Ignore them if you want its your baby but why would you put your baby at risk however small? On a practical level buy a crib or a compact cot( on sale for £39.99 at kiddicare with a half price mattress)
Thanks for the information regarding reason guidelines are there, she will be staying in my room for the first 6 months now I know reason behind guidelines. Think it's time for me to leave mumsnet now. I'm a very anxious first time mum and shouldn't be getting myself in tears over comments from a stranger.
Rtfairy nobody mean't to upset you and I'm sorry if I did.
My sister had an interrupted cot death and a friends baby died as a result of SIDS. There are lots of these threads on mumsnet. Many people post saying how their baby slept in their own room from day one and was fine etc. I find that kind of thing quite dangerous. These posters don't have a vested interest in your baby. My parents and in-laws are always telling me how we travelled on laps or in foot wells as babies and children and we are fine. I won't be taking my chances and not using car seats though.
We used a Moses basket till he could touch all the sides, and then we used a Samsonite pop up travel cot that we happened to have, for the last few weeks before he was 6 months - it is very slightly larger than the travel cot. We also wanted to follow guidelines for our own peace of mind.
we managed to get the cot from ds's room to our room without having to take it apart and it fitted in our room along the bottom of our bed. Prior to that he was in a crib. He stayed in our room until he was about 8 months old. (DD stayed in our room until around then too)
