Sleep

6 Month old waking every 2 hours in the night

My 6 month old is struggling to stay asleep during the night. She has had the same routine from the beginning but since her jabs has been very unsettled during the night. Before she would sleep through.

She will go down around 6.30pm, she goes to sleep straight away but stirs majority of the evening. If I go in her room to check on her it will wake her and then struggle to get her back down. From 10/11pm she will wake every 2 hours. To get her back to sleep takes anything between 15 minutes to an hour. I have started to self settle in her cot and she never cries just fidgets a lot. If I do leave the room she will cry. I will give her a feed between 1 and 3am when she wakes then. From 5am she is pretty much awake and rarely goes back to sleep. Needless to say we are very tired!

She naps during the day and has on average 2-3 hours max.

She does not have any teeth yet but is chewing on everything. Her teeth do not seem like they will make an appearance to soon. She is not crying in pain during the night so I don't think this is the cause but I could be wrong

If anyone has any hints or tips to get us through or to make sleep time better then please share.

If she's chewing on everything she can get her hands on then she's definitely teething and at night its always worse as they don't have anything to distract them from the pain. Have you tried calpol? It won't harm her and at least that way you'll know if she is suffering teething pain or not.

agree... teething is a v strong possibility

or another q: are you weaning her onto solids at the moment? could she be hungry? transitioning to solids is tricky; if she has been sleeping well at this age hunger can be an issue because it takes a while for new feeding patterns to kick in.

just to clarify: i meant it's a good idea to try the calpol in the first instance...

(sigh- sorry!)
if you think it's hunger it may be worth (re-) introducing a late feed c10:30/11 for a while (week or two). i had to do this with at least one of mine for a bit during early weaning.

(ok i think i've finally finished my thoughts properly Blush )

Her jabs would have been at 4 months which is the start of the infamous 4 month sleep regression when sleep tends to go to pot, so this is normal and probably nothing to do with her jabs.

It will probably settle down once she starts eating a reasonable amount unless she's teething in which case calpol and baby bonjela are worth a try.

Thanks guys, I gave her a bottle at 10.30pm last night and she went through to 4.45am! I nearly had 6 hours sleep! I have started weaning and today she has wanted more food than milk so I think it may be hunger. I will see how it goes tonight after the last night feed.
