Sleep

14 week old starting to wake nearly every hour

My ds started to more or less sleep through from 8pm-6am most evenings for about 3 weeks when he was 9 weeks old. He then started waking at 3am for a feed (he is ff) which he would take eagerly. But, over the past week or so he has gradually started waking more often and the past 2 nights it has been every hour, then he wakes completely at 5am and won't go back to sleep. Most of the time when I get up I just pop his dummy back in and he will fall back to sleep (other than his feed which I give at about 2/3am). Do you think:

    • I have started a bad habit with a baby that will wake when he is without his dummy?

    • He is going through a growth spurt and I should introduce more night feeds?

    • He is teething which is what is waking him (he does drool a lot during the day and suck his fists)

I am a little reluctant to give him more feeds in the night because it seems he has decided to make the 3am one routine (when it wasn't before). He is a big baby but isn't a guzzler, he has 6oz or there abouts on most feeds.

Do I just need to accept that I was bloody lucky to have those few weeks of sleeping through and that this is normal?

  1. Probably

Helpful aren't I? :) What I mean is thta it could be any or all of those and, chances are, you'll never know which is the right one. I don't know anything about formula feeds/quantities but could you add an extra ounce to each of his daytime feeds?

Grin Thanks Soupy!

You are probably right though, guess no one can tell me what is wrong but just wondered if anyone was going/had gone through similar.

Obviously it may be a combination of all 3 as well :o My gut feeling would be that he needs more food, hence my suggestion of adding an extra ounce to each one during the day. It's also the easiest 'solution' to try I think unless you want to try duck taping the dummy in (not recommended!).

Hmm, wrapping a scarf round his head to keep the dummy in place crossed my mind last night Grin

Dh and I have discussed adding another ounce to his feeds during the day and that's what we are going to go with. Bet the little bugger only takes 5oz when we do though!

Glad I'm not alone! I have exactly the same problem. Mine takes 7oz bottles and small quantities of baby rice for three daytime feeds yet still wakes up for dummy / comfort. Thought I was going mad!
