Sleep

Best way to end co-sleeping?

Can't do it anymore, its killing my back, hips, arms and I'm shattered. I used to get more sleep this way but DS (nearly 10m) is now pushing me out.
We're off for 2 wks at easter, I'm armed with NCSS and the mumsnet thread (you know the big one "what worked for us") but I don't know whether it will work best keeping the cot in our room or whether to put cot in his own room and go big bang. We also need to stop bf comfort feeding in the night before I loose a nipple Shock

Sorry no help here either - got super kingsize bed delivered today as DD still comes through most nights!

Super kingsize, wow I am jealous. We're in a kingsize but we're both big giraffes and ds is a little chunk. Maybe I could just jump in his cotbed tonight :)

we pushed a toddler bed up next to ours (was a futon at the time, so the same height) - this was at about 14 months.

Then we moved house and he just naturally followed the bed into his own room..

Then winter came, and he started getting cold at night, and coming into our bed increasingly earlier - until now he's back in our bed full time again, and I have to sleep curled up at the end like a family pet :S luckily I'm only short and we have a king size so this is possible. Once summer comes I'll start putting him back in his own room again

Big congrats DoctorG, jealous as hell here :) Nothing much has happened aside from he's picked up another bloody virus from nursery so he's full of cold again. We did move his cot into his own room last night, he went in it from 730 til 9, we went to bed half 9 and just took him with us. We might start tonight, have a dull ache in my stomach at the thought, but like you he's waking constantly, even in with us he wakes up hourly.
I did see the bedtime live with the little girl, only trouble was they didn't follow up with the wakings in the night. Plus this weeks little boy that wanted to bf (or his gok, made me laugh) throughout the night, but again no follow ups. I think I'm the kind of person that needs to be told exactly what to do.
I have little faith these methods are going to work for my ds, he's really strong willed and loves the boobey. CC isn't something I can think of yet, I guess i need to try the ncss stuff etc and then we'll see. Delighted that this is working out for you, you give me hope :) Like you I am reaching the end of my tether, and I'm starting to pick up all his colds because I'm so run down.

We have been doing gradual retreat for 5 days. DD was similar to your little one, except she's 21 months! I was worried about night wakins as it is not unusual for her to wake 5 times. First night she woke in the middle of the night, we did GR and she took an hour to fall asleep. Slept til morning.

Next night she woke once but was asleep again within 15 minutes.

Since then she only surfaces briefly, once per night, goes straight back down with some shushing.

Fingers crossed it continues like this! On what we have experienced so far I'd recommend this approach to anyone with an older baby who feels the need to change from co-sleeping/constant breastfeeding.

Okay, I'm motivated by your success stories ladies. Tonight is the night. DH went to pub yesterday so I lost my mojo. He did sleep in his cot though from 7 til 10, thats a bloody record for him.
He's still poorly though and I dont know what time it is never mind DS. We might make night 1 a fairly chilled start.

Disasterous first night. He was a tad too sleepy when we first put him down, although we had only been asleep for a few mins as opposed to the usual 30/40 so that was a change. He slept til gone 11 (a record) then we awoke with a scream, I've never moved so fast. He was soaked, pjs, sleeping bag, sheet, blanket and mattress protector. All bloody wringing wet, never, ever happened before. dont know if it was his nappy or maybe his Robert was pointing skywards perhaps. So, tonight we're back on.
Thanks for all your messages of support, I'm suspecting it might not be as difficult as I was imagining with him Hmm

Hi. How was last night?

I have an almost three year old dd and am five months pg with dd2.

We have done every combination of cosleeping, bf, me sleeping in dd's room. We are currentlt cosleeping full time as I'm shattered, but we have a big girl bed arriving soon and that has to be it before the baby arrives.

I'm not into cc but have to try something and make it work! Where can I het the info about gradual retreat?

I know at one point when dd was younger it really helped for me to sleep in her room. She got used to being in there with me and then I started sneaking back into my bed for a bit.

Good luck!

I put my DD into a big bed (i.e. enough room for me too) and gradually spent less and less time in there. If you have the space to do this, I think it helped because she got used to the bed without having to get used to being without me at the same time iyswim.
