Mine was climbing out of his cot at 16 months so for safety reasons we had to get him a bed.

How old is your toddler? Is there any particular reason you're thinking of moving him?

Anytime really.

Mine are still in cots/cosleeping at 2 and a bit years, but I think it would have been fine to put them in a toddler bed with a proper bed guard (not just the guard that comes on the toddler bed) from birth. There were only a few months (2? 3?) when my babies could crawl but not get safely down from our full height bed, so I had put them in cots to leave them - if the beds had been toddler height, I think I'd have been fine with that.

But basically, I think any bed could be made safe from birth, as long as you teach them how to climb down and get there fast when they wake up.

dd absolutely hated her cot, I put down her sleeping problems to her hatred of it. She didn't sleep one single night until she was 14 months old and out of desperation I put her in the single bed in her room (with a bed guard) and she slept like... well, a baby :o

She's never looked back. She's never fallen out of bed (though we do still have the bed guard up and she's 3 now) and never even actually got out of bed in the morning. She usually yells out to us in the morning when she wakes up.

Depends on the child. Safety is key. Ds1 went in a bed at 2 as soon as it was built, couldn't prise him out of it. Was a low toddler bed with sides and he never fell out. I sympathise (sp? Looks odd) with sunny as ds2 was climbing out of his cot at 18 months so he went into a bed earlier. He is very wriggly though so despite bed sides he occasionally falls out. Better to fall out of a toddler bed onto pillows than from a cot.

Depends on the child and circumstances really.

I was forced to put my twin DDs into beds at 11 months when I put them to bed one night in separate cots and found them asleep in one cot the next morning. DT1 had shimmied over the bars onto the floor and then climbed up her sisters cot and we decided it was safer to put them into little beds with guards.

sandyballs that's so sweet :) Are they usually that close or do they just like sleeping together?

I moved my 3 dc in to a bed when they could escape, used bumper bars to stop them falling out, they all acheived Houdini status at differnt stages but all were around the 2yr mark.

If your unsure about a big single bed try a toddler bed, some come with built in bumper bars, shop around see what will suit you and your budget.
A toddler bed will only last to a certain age where as a single bed will last longer, all mine moved straight in to single beds with bumper bars and I had no problems with the change over, I let dc keep the cot quilt for comfort for as long as they needed.

good luck with the big little moveSmile

They are close Headfairy and they're nearly 12. We extended our house last year so they could have separate bedrooms but they still choose to sleep together quite often.

i moved ds3 into a toddler bed when he was 14 months because he was trying to climb out of his cot. he slept brilliantly in it and has done since he was moved.
my ds4 is 11 months now and has been found leg over the bars of his cot. hes mad, doesnt sleep either throws himself around the cot like an eejit and wakes himself up banging off the sides.
so i wondered if i put him in a toddler bed would he sleep better. do u think hes too young? im about to start the no cry sleep solution so if hes gonna go into anbed i think its best he goes in now.

Mine went in beds at about a year + I think. The had small quilts in their cots for a while so they got used to covering up and not grobags. I put them at the bottom of the bed and tucked half the quilt under the matress if that makes sense.

Depends on the height of the bed, surely? Ds was in cot bed until 3, when we took side off and tucked half the duvet under.
Are the guard rails supposed to protect child from falling out at all, or just make it less likely and thus less tedious - ie is it actually dangerous for a 18mo to roll down a 2 foot drop, and if so when does it become safe?

My dd went into a standard single bed with no guards on her second birthday. i bought my ds a bed when he was two and a half but left his cot up in his room (through laziness) and every night he used to climb back in as he just loved sleeping in it and didn't want to grow up (or was a complete wimp!!).

I put mine into beds at 1 and less than 1 year old. They were both climbers and this was more dangerous than a low single bed with crash cushions on the floor.

My DS loved his cotbed with sides and never once tried to escape. He finally moved into his modified (sides off) 'big boy bed' on his third birthday with lots of exciting build up. He loves his wee bed and still hasn't tried to get out... I'm sure he will soon!

Once they work out how to escape, they're safer in bed.
My DTs were just over 2, they also used to climb into each others cots in the night.
