Sleep

drinking juice in the night

How do I stop it????

DS is 2.3 and will drink 2-4 sippy cups of squash during the night.

He goes to bed with one and will wake and ask for more several times.

It's making him leak out of nappies and I'm having to change his sheets etc but if this happens around 5 am he won't go back to sleep and is up for the day.

How should I go about breaking the habit? Cold turkey or some other method.

We have no juice left in the house so I need to do it now because then I won't give in for more sleep because I hate to see him get upset....

Please help!!

Cold turkey, offer only water. Cruel to be kind (etc.) Squash can be bad for teeth, too.

i would plain and simple just offer water

2-4 beakers is a LOT! and think of his teeth!

You could water it down over the next few days so there is vitually no juice in there, then just water after that. Sounds like he's not drinking enough during the day if he's that thirsty at night, does he get very hot and sweaty when he's asleep?

Thanks - I know I need to do this.

It just kind of evolved into this. He was night weaned off the breast at 11 months very easily. Never had anything other then water until about 6 months ago when he had some squash when he was ill and not eating or drinking. All those good intentions!

He's not very impressed. I put him to bed with some water and he kept handing it back to me! He won't even have it near him and spent 45 minutes shouting and crying 'more juice mumma'

I am worried about his teeth. It's never strong and I make sure that they are brushed well but it is still a concern yes.

I will be strong!

I was!

He woke at 1am and cried for about 30 minutes. I kept offering him water but he cried even harder so I took it away and just popped back in every 5 minutes to lay him down again.

He woke again at 4 am but I offered him the water again and he had a few sips and went back to sleep until 6.20! That's a lie in for us!

He's had one cup of water all day. A lot less then he would normally drink so I'm a little worried about that.

I think I may just offer a small beaker of fresh juice with his meals once we've cracked the night time thing. He's not a milk drinker either.

Still, he's had a huge wedge of watermelon so he should get some hydration from that shouldn't he?

If he wants juice or squash during the day then in moderation thats fine - just be consistant with just water or pref nothing at night. You sound like you have done well - well done!!!

I think I will do the juice a mealtimes thing but in a few days so he gets used to drinking just water.

He has woken 3 times tonight already :(

I'm not going to give him anything now because it's getting him more upset - he just hands it back to me or pushes it away. He is settling quickly though so I'm hoping he'll realise there is nothing to wake up for soon enough.

Does anyone know if there is an amount of liquids a 2yo should have in a day?
