Loved first family skiing holiday and now want to book another! Where to go?

We have just come back from an all-expenses paid holiday in Morzine and really enjoyed it. So we are looking into going skiing again in 2010/11 season (I know it's too early to actually book) but this time we'll have to pay for ourselves.

I've been told that Morzine is quite expensive compared to other ski resorts and we don't have much money (who does?). Any suggestions for resorts and recommendations for accommodation would be great. We will be two families; 4 adults and 4 kids (9,8,6,5) and abilities will range from complete beginner to level 3.

The thing we weren't too keen on with Morzine was the trek to the slopes each day from the chalet so something really central would be great or right next to a bus stop.

There are several resorts in France that are ski to your door.
Family friendly depends on which hotel you stay in really.
I love Alpe d'Huez, Les Menuire in the Three Valleys is also pretty good. All the ski schools start and finish in pretty much the same place.
We are going to Des Alpe this year. I have never been there before so will have to wait and see how we get on.

Skiing/snowboarding is brilliant fun and doesnt have to be that expensive either. Some operators do some great deals. If you can wait until late next year to book you are more likely to get a cheaper holiday than if you book early.

Have a look at Flaine - you can either stay slopeside in 1960s monstrosity unique architecture or a short bus ride up the hill in a cute newly built tradtional style Hammeau. Lots of gentle wide slopes, pedestrianised village, all v.family friendly, and bloody short transfers from Geneva.

I would recommend going with Snowbizz to Puy St Vincent. Very reasonably priced and good skiing instruction (they have their own English ski school and various babysitting options if you want a night out without the children, plus day time creche for younger children). Accommodation is self catering at the bottom of the slopes. There are a couple of nice restaurants for the odd meal out. Only drawbacks to this resort are that it is not extensive for experienced skiers and the snow bizz appartments do not have swimming pool/hot tub type luxury. Nevertheless they are pleasant with nice views.

Puy St Vincent looks really good! Seems to have good reviews. I'll have a look at Flaine now.

Belle Plagne is fantastic for family ski hols. We went last year for the first time and are hoping to be back there at the end of this month

Montgenevre seems to have cropped up on previous threads. What do you think about there?

Haven't been to Montgenevre yet but we are going there this year. It has an International ski school as well as the ESF - this was one of the things that made us think of going. The International ski school is apparently very good - low group numbers and good chance of lessons in English.

I'd be interested to know how Montgenevre compares with Puy St Vincent then. They both look good but the former is coming out about £500 cheaper.
