Thinking of going to Lillehammer maybe next Feb. Has anyone been or does anyone have any tips in general for Norway? Have heard it is expensive for food, but how expensive?

Thanks

hi holy, I spent two weeks in Norway this Feb at Hemsedal. The snow and skiing itself was excellent - no worries there. The accommodation/lift passes/lessons/equipment/clothes shops all very reasonable - but holy cow - the food?

We had breakfast included at our hotel thank goodness and we managed to decipher the menu at the mountain lodges to get the meal of the day (burger & chips/lasagne/meatballs + chips/salad +drink) for about 10 pounds per person. The portions were massive though - this was a real blessing because eating in the evening was horrendous.

OK, everyone knows the alcohol is expensive in Norway - about 5-6 quid a pint - but tbh we're not drinkers so it didn't affect us at all. But we found it was 25 quid for a main course of "proper" food, or 25 quid for a pizza. There was NOTHING for a tenner... I must admit we spent a few nights in our room just eating crisps because we were so horrified by the food prices. The bars/cafes in town were absolutely deserted bar people in there for the free wifi and drinking water - I kid you not!

Lots of people seem to go self-catering but the stuff in the supermarkets is also hugely expensive. 2-3 quid for a loaf of bread for example.

The skiing itself was wonderful and I would definitely return - but with more money!
