We will be in the US for Christmas/New Year and want to nip off or a few days in-between to give our hosts a break. Could either do a city break in New York, or squeeze a few days' skiing in somewhere that side. Too far to go to Colorado etc.. So, where would be open (i.e. guaranteed snow), and not too crowded, and reasonably close-ish to an airport? We're all intermediate skiiers, by the way. Don't need black runs but not nursery runs either. European reds, mainly.
I worked one season at Stratton mountain, Vermont (prob too far?) but very nice, and good snow making if no natural snow (on a very large number of runs). Great childrens facilities too. The only down side was the temperatures on the east got very low in the depths of winter.
