Has anyone been to Norway to ski and if so what did you make of it?

We've been to Geilo twice. Not sure what your requirements are? Geilo was a great starter location for the kids. Guaranteed snow. Slopes more or less empty. Instructors speak perfect English. Absolutely safe.

Thanks Jan, that sounds ideal. DD (7) and DH have never skiied before and I've not been for years so black runs etc. not necessary! We're hoping to escape the braying hoards as well. Would you recommend any particular operator?

We went independently as we wanted to see Oslo for a weekend and travel up by train to avoid any bus transfers (bleurgh). But the Geilo tourist people arranged all our ski hire, accommodation etc. We stayed at the Highland Park Hotel and skiied on the Geilolia side of the valley. Great for kids. Crystal and Neilson both had guests in our hotel, though doing it independently cost us a lot less!

That sounds great, the thought of the traansfer was putting me off (don't do buses!) Will have a hunt round on the web.

Norwegian trains are great - they have a family carriage with a special area for kids - either climbing frames and soft floor, or an enclosed room with DVD player and bean bags etc. There are budget airlines to Bergen and Oslo and the train to Geilo runs between the two.

We went to Geilo, and I think you would be fine on the train with the kids. I thought it was a great place, we tried DH on cross country skiing because he doesn't do down hill - didn't work - but I'd like to go back sometime with the boys. Lots of other activities too.

We booked with Inntravel.
