Skiing while pregnant??

I come from a skiing area, and usually plan to meet my brother + SIL + my mum near my hometown for a week or at least a weekend of skiing each year. DP loves to ski. This year my DB and I are super excited to get my daughter on skis for the first time. However, the way the dates are working out I will be about 22-24 weeks pregnant. I don't expect much and I may not be able to ski at all due to how I feel / insurance / etc, which is fine. I would like to at least get out in the snow to get DD on skis so...

  1. Had anyone skied this pregnant? I think my mom did but that was 30++ years ago!
  2. WTF do I wear??? If nothing else I will be playing in the snow so I want to be warm and waterproof. I am big and tall anyway so just going up a size or three in tk maxx probably won't work although I'll look.

Thanks!

I've seen great longer winter jackets with a zip in insert for when pregnant. Not ski jackets per se but for minus conditions (in the US but I bet you could get in the UK too).

I wore a men's oversized trespass ski jacket for all of my pregnancy. It wasn't stylish but was warm and zipped up fine over my bump. And then perhaps salopettes unzipped?! Would work but only if you found a longer length jacket perhaps?

I would totally ski but stick to gentle and non-busy slopes where I could sure of not falling or being crashed into. Remember your balance may be a bit from the bump though!

I skied quite a bit while pregnant but mainly in the first trimester (only because I fell pregnant in December ) I only went to quiet places because I am a confident skier but I was worried about people crashing into me. I managed with some trousers that were two sizes up and my normal ski jacket and wore normal long thermal tops underneath.
The only thing was I found myself out of breath so quickly at altitude so had to move really slowly!
Have a great time Smile

Thanks for the advice! I'll Google the special jackets battle I didn't know they existed!

Holly yeah I worry about being crashed into too. I can control myself but other people have really taken me out a few times.

Personally I just wouldn't risk it!

I didn't ski when I was pregnant before, but depending on how I felt now I would. Not somewhere too busy or hectic, and only really pottering about to get to certain ski huts.

I wore a man's ski jacket when I was pregnant as it was the only cheap option I could find.

The good thing is you can really concentrate on getting your daughter skiing. I remember the first few times with a 3/4/5 year old and the day was so broken up with ski school timings, having to be certain places at certain times and going to specific runs/areas that I didn't ski much at all!

If you look at //www.zipusin.co.uk or makemybellyfit, they both have inexpensive panels you can zip into an existing jacket during pregnancy.

Hi, I skiied in France when I was 27-28 weeks pregnant with my daughter (now 11), I also had a son who was 15 months old at the time. I am reasonably tall and I just wore normal ski clothes. I did not do anything challenging, mainly blues - if you are skiing with your daughter for the first time then you will probably be on the nursery slopes. I only skiied the mornings, as I looked after my son in the afternoon - I did do a reasonable amount of sport though so was quite fit generally (in those days....). My view is really that baby is very well protected and as long as you ski within your comfort zone (particularly in terms of speed) then you will be OK. It's quite hard to fall forwards and land directly on your stomach when skiing, the risk is more with ligament stretches etc. I can see why some people wouldn't want to, and for the record, I have also had three miscarriages so I did a lot of research and was happy to go myself. Up to you though - I am tall and at 28 weeks it was not obvious that I was pregnant - it might be different if you have a huge bump as your centre of gravity would be more affected.....
